Day 210, orbit 3255 — A few pictures from EVA-99! In some of them, you can really see just how small I am compared to the Station, which is roughly the size of a football field. Day 202 orbit 3131 — And that's three! Who remembers Jack standing at the bow of the Titanic 🚢, gazing out at the endless blue ocean ahead? That image popped into my mind as I reached the forward end of the Station to replace a retroreflector crucial for Dragon spacecraft dockings. Definitely one of the most beautiful views in the world, and at the same time a bit intimidating from inside my spacesuit, with 400 km of emptiness beneath my feet. Ahead of me, nothing but the hypnotic blue of Earth 🌏, contrasting with the infinitely deep black of space. I arrived there during orbital night, my way lit only by my helmet lights, and then the Sun peeked over the horizon, illuminating our magnificent planet as it rotated beneath me. Just... wow! They say that the journey matters more than the destination 😉 Reaching this part of the Station requires carefully making your way through dozens of structures and items that you absolutely must not touch, neither with the bulky rigid spacesuit nor with the tethers and straps that accompany every movement. Add to that handrails crowded with cables, and tools that seem to have a natural tendency to snag on anything they can... Imagine moving slowly, methodically and precisely through a cactus 🌵 forest, doing everything you can to avoid the spines! I had been warned: "It's complicated, but it's doable." Of all the tasks I was entrusted with, this is probably the one I'm happiest to have completed successfully. What an adventure these three spacewalks have been! But it will be good to catch my breath and recover physically before our return to Earth, which is also quite a challenge for the human body. 🫶 The teams were incredible. Jour 202, orbite 3131 – Et de 3 ! Qui se souvient de Jack à la proue du Titanic 🚢, visualisant devant lui l’infini océan bleu... C’est exactement ce qui m’est passé par la tête lorsque j’ai rejoint le point le plus en avant de la station pour remplacer un rétroréflecteur indispensable à l’amarrage de la capsule Dragon. Forcément l’une des plus belles vues au monde, et en même temps, tellement impressionnante depuis mon scaphandre, avec 400 km de vide sous les pieds. Et comme seul paysage devant moi, le bleu hypnotisant de la Terre 🌏 en contraste avec le noir infiniment dense de l’espace. Je suis arrivée de nuit, sans autre éclairage que celui de mon casque, et quand le soleil a pointé son nez sur l’horizon, notre magnifique planète qui défilait sous mes yeux. Juste... waouh ! On dit souvent que l’important, c’est le chemin, pas la destination 😉 Pour rejoindre cette zone de la Station, il faut progresser avec précaution au milieu de dizaines d’éléments qu’il ne faut surtout pas toucher, ni avec l’imposant scaphandre rigide, ni avec les longes et les sangles qui accompagnent nos mouvements. Ajoutez à cela les mains courantes encombrées de câbles, et les outils qui semblent avoir une attirance naturelle pour tous les endroits où ils peuvent se coincer... Visualisez une forêt de cactus 🌵 dans laquelle vous avancez lentement, avec précision et méthode, pour éviter tout contact avec les épines ! J’étais prévenue : « C’est compliqué, mais faisable » et je suis particulièrement heureuse d’avoir mené à bien cette mission qui m’avait été confiée. Quelle belle aventure que ces trois sorties extravéhiculaires ! Mais je l’avoue, cela va faire du bien de souffler un peu et de récupérer physiquement avant notre retour sur Terre, qui représente lui aussi un sacré défi pour l’organisme. 🫶 Les équipes ont été formidables. Spacewalk complete ✅ That's six hours and 49 minutes outside the International Space Station for ESA's @Soph_astro and NASA's @Astro_Jessica. With today's EVA, Sophie completes her third spacewalk, with a total of 19 hours and 42 minutes spacewalking time.

Some words and good vibes from @Soph_astro on returning inside the @Space_Station after her third spacewalk. Reflecting on the view from her workspace today, "...the Earth was really beautiful. And it makes us feel even more human and wanting to take care of our home planet."

Day 195 orbit 3025 — Woohoo! Second spacewalk, only seven days after the first: done! ✅ I’ve now spent a total of 12 hours and 53 minutes outside the Station across two EVAs! Not everything went according to plan 😅 but overall EVA-98 still went much more smoothly than EVA-97. Physically, that second EVA was more challenging 💪 because I had to translate back and forth across the Station several times and handle a lot of tools. In microgravity, objects seem to have a mind of their own because they are attached by retractable tethers. They either drift away, come back at you fast, or seem intent on finding the most inconvenient place possible to get stuck. It's very easy to get entangled, so I was very careful and doubled- and tripled- checked everything, and in the end, I was especially happy that nothing got tangled! That second EVA was also more mentally demanding. For EVA-97, we approached the SGANT replacement with fresh eyes and plenty of optimism… For the second EVA, we had firsthand experience of the issues we might face. Of course both times we were 100% ready (and more!), but we definitely felt the pressure a bit more for EVA-98. The ground teams were amazing 🫶. The weekend before, everyone onboard and on the ground was working hard, and we had e-meetings together to make sure everyone would be best prepared to react in case of off-nominal situations. Such hard preparation work creates strong bonds which are so important later during the spacewalk. Out there, every shout of happiness is heartfelt, every compliment gives you a boost of energy, and a bit of light-hearted banter helps ease the pressure. That's teamwork at its best: looking out for one another, offering help before it's needed, or simply saying, "You've got this!” at exactly the right moment. Jour 195, orbite 3025 – Youhou ! Deuxième sortie dans l’espace, seulement sept jours après la première : mission accomplie ! ✅ Je cumule désormais 12 heures et 53 minutes à l’extérieur de la Station au cours de deux EVA ! Tout ne s’est pas déroulé exactement comme prévu 😅, mais dans l’ensemble, l’EVA-98 a été beaucoup plus fluide que l’EVA-97. Physiquement, cette deuxième EVA était plus exigeante 💪 car j’ai dû me déplacer plusieurs fois d’un bout à l’autre de la Station. En micropesanteur, les objets semblent doués de leur propre volonté… Ils sont reliés à nous par des longes rétractables, et ils ont tendance soit à dériver au loin, soit à revenir vers nous à toute vitesse, soit à chercher l’endroit le plus inopportun possible pour se coincer. On peut très facilement se retrouver emmêlé, alors j’ai tout systématiquement vérifié deux ou trois fois. Et cela a payé : je suis particulièrement heureuse de ne pas m’être empêtrée dans les longes et les sangles ! Cette deuxième EVA a également été plus exigeante mentalement. Pour l’EVA-97, nous avions abordé le remplacement de l’antenne SGANT avec un regard neuf et beaucoup d’optimisme... Pour la seconde, nous savions d’expérience quelles difficultés pouvaient nous attendre. Dans les deux cas, nous étions prêts à 100 % (et même davantage !), mais nous ressentions clairement un peu plus de pression pour l’EVA-98. Les équipes au sol ont été exceptionnelles. Tout le week-end précédent, les équipes à bord comme au sol ont travaillé d’arrache-pied, et nous avons fait plusieurs réunions pour nous assurer que chacun serait prêt à réagir au mieux en cas de situation non nominale. Ce travail de préparation intense crée des liens très forts, qui sont très précieux lors de la sortie dans l’espace. Dehors, chaque cri de joie vient du cœur, chaque compliment redonne un boost d’énergie, et les plaisanteiries entre nous aident à relâcher la pression. C’est là que l’on mesure la force d’une équipe : savoir veiller les uns sur les autres, proposer son aide ou simplement dire « Tu vas y arriver ! » exactement au bon moment.
