what I’m looking for in a community is people who take rat/EA ideas as given, and “yes and” them by talking about feelings with a non-berkeley-rationalist-dialect. “tpot” feels frustrating to me because it used to be close to this and now isn’t. I just want a name for this

creating UNSONG was massively economically inefficient relative to several plausible alternative structures and did not further the defeat of Hell

guy who believes that model welfare is a moral catastrophe worse than factory farming but that that’s fine because factory farming isn’t that bad compared to wild animal welfare
have model welfare bros considered that there are tremendously more insects than there are language models

this is good but it would be better if compensation included the implied compensation from doing a more fun job. actually all economic discourse would be better if “implied foregone comp realized through employee enjoyment” was a number reported with every job offer
Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/NmmAzhf

the problem with ftx is the same as the problem with slutcon [hiring your friends]
i do think that the actually bad non-optics questions are actually just issues with rampant COIs/hiring-of-friends in rat/ea orgs and could be better addressed by everyone’s processes moving up a few rungs on the professionalism scale

If you're going to a bar after a conference, be sure not to engage in any networking there! It's unfair to those of us who have trouble making out words in loud backgrounds. Joke is, when I'm at an event that would be offputting to a lot of valued newcomers in some valid way, I actually don't talk about work! In part because I try to keep work in the work box for sanity reasons. But I'm also aware of what bad culture can start looking like in that way, and that the level of business-demanded alcohol consumption in Japan would be actually experienced by me as exclusionary. I think it's fair to claim that nobody is losing out on networking opportunities with me by their not going to something exclusionary-ish (sufficiently that I classify it as No Work Allowed). I hesitate to say such things, for who knows what triggers anti-bragging types; but maybe it doesn't actually help if I don't tout it and potential valued newcomers don't hear about my rule. One must not yield to terrorists, but when the terrorists crawl back in their garbage cans and the bot armies are blocked, it is possible that I will propose this as more of a community norm; not to placate anyone but for being a good idea qua good idea that I was already doing for myself. And if not, and if others act differently than I? Then I suppose it shall be to some others as "no alcohol" and "cannot hear in loud environments" is to me. It does mean that I don't follow some groups when they leave a work gathering, en masse, in majority and not mere minority. But I don't begrudge other people their joy of talking over a roar of background conversation and cognitively impairing themselves. There is too little joy in the world for me to want to take their strange delight away. Even if it is not my joy, and even if they then end up having an interesting work conversation when I will not be there.

my take on the recent discourse is that you should evaluate all the options available to you and take the actions with the best expected utility according to your own values

1. I don’t think that guy quit his job to fuck Aella, I just don’t, but 2. If this about Irregular is even remotely true you should really, really be focusing more than a paragraph on it, because there’s actually meat on that bone.

New compromise policy where the labs stop training new models but are legally required to continue to purchase nvidia brand gpus
Interesting back and forth. Ezra describes the HF incident, Jensen says "well they shouldn't release the product." Ezra says "this product wasn't released," and Jensen's response is that if they say they can't contain their experiments then "we have to shut the labs down"
