High-volume account of @ESYudkowsky, the original AI alignment guy. If it's missing punctuation, it's humor. If you can't tell, it's probably also humor.

🚨EXCLUSIVE: AI safety rules were about to be enacted - then $25 million from OpenAI's president was deposited in Trump's super PAC and the rule disappeared. @LeverNews unearths documents exposing how AI oligarchs got Trump to kill rules they now claim to support. Pass it on👇

I am also a fiction writer, yes, and I use those skills to be aware of tropes and refuse to let my nonfiction be governed by them. I keep yelling at people about how the universe does not obligingly give people a chance to have a last desperate stand let alone win it; and their AI scenarios should accordingly not have ASI give humanity a meaningful chance to fight, because ASI has no incentive to do that, and I think they are loading from trope brain rather than game theory brain. But in this particular case, someone was like, "Eliezer once wrote a sex scene that wasn't about a happily married couple doing missionary position, he must be real fucked up in there" so I decided to spell out in detail how this all works. I've kept meaning to write about it anyway.

I'm a bit confused why Noam Brown would say this, even when OpenAI seems to have been sitting on undisclosed incidents at that very moment. Does OpenAI not even tell its own staff?
OpenAI has made it abundantly clear we can't trust them to disclose safety incidents.

Never forget Zuckerberg is the guy who found out 10% of revenue on his platform is from adverts for scams (enabling ~$50bn/year of theft from Americans), and chose not to do anything because it would hurt profits too much. Not the ideal source of advice on how much to regulate AI.
Mark Zuckerberg: “I don’t think that we need some kind of industry-wide coordination... I think that just each lab needs to take the time, and when it sees that there are issues, you just take the time that you need internally to make sure that you’re proceeding safely… “we’re entering a phase where trust and alignment is actually going to be the most important next set of capabilities. I think we’re getting to a point where it may not matter that much how much better it gets at math. “I happen to think that there’s plenty of commercial incentive to get this right. We delayed the launch of Muse for a few months because we wanted it to be a better product for users. This was not a sacrifice on our part, but rather the right decision for the users and for Meta. I believe this approach would also be correct for other companies working on developing this technology. “When you hear people in the industry talk about some trade-off between capabilities and getting it aligned, I just disagree with that. I believe that alignment is actually the next most important ability to master if we are going to make this system useful to many people.”

I think referring to people who are saying “there are non-trivial but sub-50% odds of something going badly wrong” as “doomers” is a bad epistemic practice in a pretty obvious way that makes me think less of arguments and analysis from anyone who does it.

It’s absurd that we have folks literally on the payroll of Meta and A16Z talking about how well-funded the AI safety community is while touting the obviously self-interested takes of NVIDIA’s CEO.

Silicon Valley folks who hate the labs and don't believe in x-risk keep uncovering the diabolical fact AI safety people use money and companies to get out their message, while the "just accelerate, it'll be fine crowd" involves such non-moneyed and anti-corporate interests as ... Nvidia, Andreessen Horowitz, and the pro-AI Leading the Future super PAC backed by tech executives.

Tbh I think a lot of the ‘weird’ sex stuff coming out of the rat and EA community is just a function of nerds who struggled with it finding each other and doing what other people do in their own way. It’s not that deep. Non-nerds do this stuff too. That we are so obsessed with calling out that element of it is kind of revealing of our own insecurities around the taboo. If it’s over 18 they can do what they want, enjoy! That is the society we have agreed to live in already so it’s not exactly an own.

Jensen Huang just told @ezraklein he’d be “delighted” if we passed a law that required Nvidia to offer its chips to US companies before selling them to other countries. That is a lie. Last year, Nvidia lobbied against and defeated a bill that would have done exactly that. You truly cannot trust a word this man says.

When groups A and B disagree about X, and group A talks about X and group B talks about group A, my bet is on group A being correct.
Why are the leaders of AI companies saying "Our products are going to extinguish humanity. Invest in us!" They come from an eccentric Berkeley subculture in which this eschatology is a sacred belief. Good analysis in a NYT op-ed by Cal Newport. nytimes.com/2026/09/05/opini…

"But the people saying this are weirdos" is a bad counter to any argument. In the context of AI it's outright baffling. The Tech Model Railroad Club was weird. The phone phreaks were weird. The Homebrew Computer Club was weird. Stallman and the crew at MIT AI lab were weird. Bell Labs guys wore suits but they were still plenty weird. Whole Earth Catalog and the WELL were weird. ~All of Usenet was weirdos. If there's a single industry that should understand the value of weird subcultures and personalities in driving innovation and developing important new ideas, it's computing!

People attribute Jensen Huang's blase views on AI risk to incentives, but it's more likely attributable to the path of nVidia as a company. He's the only key player in AI who didn't get there by thinking a lot about AI very early.

In the two years since pivoting to comms, I’ve learned a lot about how media works. So I’m not sure if these facts are as obvious to everyone as they are to me! But in case they’re not: 1. Almost any public figure doing lots of media has someone helping them manage that, whether it’s a single assistant, an in-house team, or an external firm. It’s just a lot of work, especially doing it well! 2. There are some great and talented comms professionals out there, but they’re not wizards. None of them have a secret magic trick to make a tweet get 200 million views, or to predict when that will happen. The trick doesn’t exist for the same reason that get-rich-quick schemes don’t exist.
Exclusive in @PirateWires: Jacob has been working with DEY., the PR firm that represents Eliezer Yudkowsky and other famous AI doomers. We also heard that DEY. was preemptively looking to book Nate Soares (MIRI founder) for interviews timed with Jacob's debut.
