Humanity is great and I want it to keep existing. Comms at @MIRIBerkeley. Former math teacher. Enjoyer of sci-fi, games, forecasting, psychology. Views my own.

AI could kill all humans, according to the majority of AI experts, the CEOs of all 3 leading AI companies, and the 3 most-cited scientists in the field. Here’s why: (1/12)

Just thought of a third thing to add: 3. Experienced comms people can do some of the legwork to help you get interviews, but again, they're not wizards. Ultimately, major outlets are only going to give you the time of day if you're newsworthy/famous. In Coxon's case, he instantly became very newsworthy/famous due to his tweet going gigaviral

In the two years since pivoting to comms, I’ve learned a lot about how media works. So I’m not sure if these facts are as obvious to everyone as they are to me! But in case they’re not: 1. Almost any public figure doing lots of media has someone helping them manage that, whether it’s a single assistant, an in-house team, or an external firm. It’s just a lot of work, especially doing it well! 2. There are some great and talented comms professionals out there, but they’re not wizards. None of them have a secret magic trick to make a tweet get 200 million views, or to predict when that will happen. The trick doesn’t exist for the same reason that get-rich-quick schemes don’t exist.
Exclusive in @PirateWires: Jacob has been working with DEY., the PR firm that represents Eliezer Yudkowsky and other famous AI doomers. We also heard that DEY. was preemptively looking to book Nate Soares (MIRI founder) for interviews timed with Jacob's debut.

Why did nobody else find the sensitive information that the HuggingFace swarm left behind? Why didn't OpenAI notice and clean it up? Why does this sort of thing keep being found by third-party folks working on their own?
We just discovered almost a million public URLs that OpenAI’s agents left behind when hacking Hugging Face, leaking credentials and attack details that could have allowed anyone who found them to compromise the company. 🧵

My recent AI risk posts have been getting an unusual amount of toxic negative replies. Maybe this is just a side effect of the topic going mainstream, or something about my recent posts, but it did make me wonder if there is a coordinated effort or bots (I genuinely don't know)

On the other hand, this seems like it would actually be a pretty bad strategy for a coordinated effort. Leaving dozens of replies under a post is mostly just going to help boost the post in the algorithm

Regardless, there are more important things that I'd rather spend time discussing. I strongly agree with how the article above concludes: "But both sides trading accusations about who is paying whom can get you only so far. At some point, the conversation must return to the actual issues and the merits of the arguments on either side: What should we make of AI progress? How dangerous is it really? What would a sane policy response to all of this look like? The sooner the discourse can return to focusing on these core questions, the better."

I resigned from Google today. I enjoyed my work and loved the people, but my GDM team was working on a new generation of chips to make AI much faster and cheaper, and I think AI is already progressing too fast, so I had to quit.

“We’re not going to do a pause.” @ericschmidt tells @zannymb why the incentives make an AI pause impossible, and what America and China should agree to instead. Watch the full interview on Tuesday at 6pm London time (1pm in New York): bit.ly/4y9psqS

Clearly a hoax—Australia is not a real place
Australia has been hacked. 'And today, I spoke with the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, to express Australia's extreme concern about this incident. And I also expressed my disappointment that it took the company way too long to inform the government what had occurred, and the nature of the way that that notification occurred as well was unacceptable.'

The Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act directly confronts the extinction threat that humanity is facing. We are inspired that the Sanders and Casar teams take this threat seriously, and MIRI endorses the Act. You can read more of our thoughts in the link below.
The leading experts are clear: AI is rapidly escaping our control. Congress must act NOW. Today I’m introducing legislation to permanently ban artificial superintelligence and pause advanced AI until clear safety rules are in place.

Why has the world been slow to do anything about the insanely dangerous AI race? I think because most people fall into one of three categories: 1. Simply unaware of the situation. 2. At least a bit aware, but don't personally feel qualified to do much or even speak about it. Hoping that experts have it under control. 3. Very aware, due to being immersed in the broader AI scene--a cultural bubble that somehow normalized the status quo of the AI race and somehow became desensitized to the idea of gambling with human extinction.
