The controversy surrounding the renaming of Dimtsi Woyane tigray reveals something far more troubling than a dispute over a media institution. It exposes how deeply the TPLF succeeded in blurring the distinction between a political party and the identity of an entire people.
Who decided that a partisan propaganda institution, which helped sustain decades of political monopoly and distorted Tigray’s political culture, should be treated as an indispensable symbol of Tigrayan identity?
I understand why committed TPLF supporters resist the change. What I find intellectually indefensible is the position of those who claim to oppose the TPLF while treating its former propaganda apparatus as though it were embedded in Tigray’s DNA.
The legitimate concern over attempts to erase Tigrayan history must never become an excuse for preserving the political mythology of the TPLF. Renaming a broadcaster is not, by itself, historical erasure. Destroying historical records would be.
Tigray existed before the TPLF, and it will exist long after it. A people whose identity is reduced to the institutions of a political party have not yet achieved genuine political emancipation
