ECONOMIC WATCH: Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele says investors and the international community expect President Bola Tinubu’s possible re-election in 2027 to bring continuity in Nigeria’s economic reforms. Oyedele spoke alongside CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso at a press briefing during the 2026 IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand. He said investors were concerned about whether political pressure ahead of the election could lead to a reversal of the government’s policies. “The markets and the international community have been pricing in the prospect of a second term for the President, and they expect continuity in the reforms,” he said. Oyedele insisted the reforms were aimed at stabilising the economy rather than helping Tinubu secure another term. He warned that reversing them could trigger capital flight and put renewed pressure on the naira. “There will be no return to fuel subsidies or multiple exchange rates,” he declared. He also clarified that NNPC Retail’s petrol discount was a commercial decision and did not mean the government had restored fuel subsidies. On economic growth, Oyedele said Nigeria was targeting 7 per cent growth, identifying food, energy and logistics costs as major obstacles to expansion. He added that the government wanted inflation to fall to low single digits, creating room for lower interest rates and more affordable credit for businesses. The minister further disclosed that Nigeria had presented 65 investment projects worth $78.5 billion to prospective investors across sectors including agriculture, mining, energy, transport, healthcare and industry. However, he stressed that the success of the reforms should ultimately be measured by their impact on ordinary Nigerians. “Stability is earned, and growth is a task,” he said, adding that economic progress must translate into jobs, business expansion and improved living conditions. His remarks come amid continuing debate over Tinubu’s economic policies and their impact on Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general election.

We undertook our economic reforms to build a stronger foundation for investment and give more Nigerians the opportunity to earn a better living. I welcome the World Bank Group’s work to mobilise up to $5.79 billion in private financing for Nigeria. This partnership supports our efforts to help businesses expand and attract investment into agriculture and digital infrastructure. Nigeria has gone a step further to put together a pipeline of 65 bankable projects seeking $78.5 billion in investment. Our Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele @taiwoyedele, presented these opportunities alongside CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso at the Nigeria Investors Forum, on the sidelines of the 2026 IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok. I invite Nigerian and international investors to examine these projects and engage directly with their sponsors through Projects Nigeria. Our administration will work with you to resolve obstacles and move viable investments into execution, creating jobs and expanding opportunities for our people. President Tinubu has two very rare attributes among democratic leaders across the world, which are the willingness to do the right thing even when it’s unpopular, and a strong understanding of the economy, including respect for the independence of monetary policy- Taiwo Oyedele, Minister of Finance

These are some of the basic things we need to pay attention to in this country. Govt. Needs to certify all trailer drivers to know who and who is fit to drive trailers

Osimhen changed Lerry’s life. Osimhen changed Tife’s life. He linked Carter Efe with Antonio Rüdiger. He invited Bernesse to Turkey to watch Galatasaray live. He linked Kombo and Cali Sports with Lamine Yamal. in a world where footballers are treated like gods and are almost impossible to reach, Victor Osimhen remains humble, accessible and supportive of african creators. He is 1 of 1, such a blessing!

FEDERAL MINISTRY OF FINANCE PRESS RELEASE BANGKOK, Thailand — 14 October 2026 Oyedele Chairs G-24 Call for Fairer Global Financial System, Affordable Development Financing Nigeria's Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, chaired the G-24 Board of Governors meeting on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings, leading calls for reform of the global financial architecture to deliver more affordable financing, fairer representation and faster sovereign debt resolution for developing economies. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and World Bank Senior Managing Director Axel van Trotsenburg, representing President Ajay Banga, joined other G-24 Governors in commending Oyedele's leadership of discussions that addressed mounting financing pressures on emerging and developing economies amid geopolitical tension, volatile commodity prices, climate shocks and tighter global financial conditions. Oyedele said rising interest rates, widening fiscal deficits in advanced economies and growing financing demand for artificial intelligence and energy infrastructure had made borrowing more expensive for developing countries. He called for progress on IMF quota and governance reform, stronger representation for developing countries at the World Bank, improved access to development finance, and more predictable, coordinated debt restructuring involving all creditors. He also urged expanded climate financing, stronger international tax cooperation against avoidance and illicit flows, and a greater voice for developing countries in global decision-making, including the G-20. In his closing remarks, Oyedele drew three lessons from the discussions: that resilience must be built before a crisis, through proactive policy preparation; that artificial intelligence must be adopted and regulated responsibly to support inclusive job-rich growth; and that international cooperation remains essential to managing shared risks such as energy insecurity, food price volatility, supply-chain disruption, debt vulnerability and climate change. Georgieva described the global economy as resilient, with growth projected at about 3.1 percent through 2026, but cautioned that the figure masked a widening gap between economies benefiting from digital transformation, AI investment and critical-mineral supply chains, and those constrained by high energy costs, conflict or limited access to technology. She warned that persistent energy and food price pressures were keeping interest rates and debt-servicing costs elevated, and urged governments to rebuild fiscal buffers, preserve central bank independence, invest in digital infrastructure and skills, and push for faster debt treatment under the G-20 Common Framework alongside further IMF quota reform. Van Trotsenburg reported that the World Bank had mobilised about US$27.4 billion in crisis-related financing, with ten countries activating dedicated crisis-response instruments and nineteen others redirecting existing resources to urgent needs. He flagged El Niño-related risks to food security and grain prices, and said the Bank remained focused on electricity access, healthcare, digital connectivity and job creation — in tourism, healthcare, food systems and manufacturing — alongside mobilising private capital and climate finance. Member interventions reinforced the reform agenda: Brazil, China and Pakistan backed stronger Global South representation and Bretton Woods reform; the Philippines called for deeper regional financial integration; Kenya urged building policy buffers and expanding local-currency financing; Egypt cited supply-chain disruption and capital outflows; and Lebanon and Syria raised the financing challenges facing conflict-affected economies. Incoming G-24 Chair Pakistan pledged to keep development at the centre of the agenda. The meeting concluded that domestic reform alone will not shield developing economies from external shocks — affordable finance, effective debt resolution, fairer representation in international institutions, and sustained cooperation are equally necessary.
