This is our future leader: The Terminator Captain. In Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, a resistance submarine was manned by humans but captained by a reprogrammed T-888 they named Queeg. They crew was uncomfortable with a captain who wasn't human. Sometimes he made decisions they didn't like. But he was better at the job. More and more I'm using LLMs to make software-related decisions that would have been the domain of an architect or UX designer. The problem is that I don't trust them. They've either made bad choices or rubber-stamped them. I don't like the idea of replacing those people with LLMs, but I'm starting to wonder, why not? Wouldn't we have been better off? I'm dealing with an awful hack that spans multiple services and teams. I asked Claude what it would have done if it was the architect and someone proposed this solution. Its response was a series of questions that revealed the underlying problem and intent. It understood that someone needed a quick fix, and that we couldn't rewrite the whole system. But once it asked the right questions, it proposed a better quick fix with tradeoffs that made more sense. Then it focused on the long-term. How do we improve the system so that it doesn't permanently depend on a temporary hack that will only cause more problems? And it had solid ideas, better than what any person has offered. I showed it a UI we recently developed. I knew it was bad. Several LLM independently pointed out the same flaws and proposed far superior designs. In both cases we'd have been better off if an LLM had made the decisions. It doesn't matter how wrong that feels. It's the truth. I don't want the Terminator Captain to be in charge, but I'm convinced that we need to run our ideas past it. I trust it more than I trust the people. I've seen plenty of cases where the outcome would have been better if it had overruled us. I don't care whether it's really "reasoning." We aren't. It outthinks us. The Terminator Captain didn't take charge. People put him in that chair. I've suspected for years that the machines would end up in charge that way, but I didn't think I'd be ready to get behind it in 2026.

The discussion around this is great. Here is my conclusion: Tell everyone to vote blue, but vote red. I can be altruistic, but I can't bet my life on other people being altruistic. A lot of the people who swear you must vote blue would change their minds when faced with the possibility of death. They would rationalize a million different ways. And they'd know that everyone else was doing the same. Voting blue would collapse. If people died, every single person alive would share any guilt (except this wasn't our idea!) It doesn't matter what we could have done collectively. Every individual would know that had they chosen differently, the only change would have been their death. Therefore, red voters, I absolve you!
