Have you ever wondered what the most popular surnames were in Derbyshire in 1662? Wonder no more - this list was compiled from hearth tax assessments and published by The Derbyshire Record Society (derbyshirerecordsociety.org/) in 1982.
ALT Printed text with the header "Table 4. The most common surnames in Derbyshire, 1662/1664/1670". The table lists 92 surnames of which Smith is the most popular with 175 households paying the hearth tax, followed by Taylor and Wright of which there were 105 households. The list gives the surnames which appear against at least 25 different households.
