Geologists messing about in boats… and looking for clues in the mud... Lake sediment sampling is underway at Scotch Lake, one of the Ontario Rare Earth Element (REE) properties that we optioned earlier this year. It may not look like conventional mineral exploration - there’s not a rock hammer in sight - but the sediment at the bottom of these lakes can provide valuable clues about the geochemistry of the surrounding area. Why the mud matters: 🌊 Lakes act as natural collection points for material transported through their catchments. 🔬 Weathering and erosion release tiny particles carrying the chemical signature of the rocks they came from. 🧪 Analysing the sediments for REEs and other geochemical indicators can help identify anomalous areas. 📍 Those anomalies can then help narrow the search for the source rocks that may warrant further investigation. So, while a bucket of lake mud might not look particularly exciting, it can help point exploration in the right direction.
