Incredible. Vance arrives in Alaska carrying his newborn baby. He is single-handedly humanizing fatherhood. Kids aren’t burdens, they’re the future.

Ok, this is incredible. A new classical Catholic high school just opened in Fairfax County (St. Jerome Institute) — this is what a serious education looks like: – Phones collected at the door – Every class is a seminar discussion – 15-20 students seated facing one another – Art and music are required, NOT elective – Math class teaches "the intrinsic beauty of math" – Entire curriculum is integrated: philosophical and theological questioning in every class And here's the literature section of the reading list: 9th grade (Exodus & Odyssey): – Homer, Odyssey – Genesis – Plato, Euthyphro and Apology – Virgil, Aeneid – Exodus – Beowulf – Song of Roland – Gospel of Luke – Plato, Phaedo and Crito – Acts of the Apostles – Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea – Wilder, Our Town 10th grade (God & Nature): – Creation myths – Plato, Timaeus and Symposium – Aristotle, De Anima – Plotinus – Augustine, Gregory of Nyssa, Bonaventure, Aquinas – Sir Gawain and the Green Knight – Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream – Descartes, Meditations – Bacon, Newton, Darwin – Berry, Wilder, Tolkien – Tocqueville – Benedict XVI – Cather, Death Comes for the Archbishop – Faulkner, The Bear 11th grade (God & the Human Person): – Sophocles, Oedipus Rex – Plato, Symposium – Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics – Augustine, Confessions – Shakespeare, Twelfth Night and King Lear – Hobbes, Leviathan – Swift, A Modest Proposal – Austen, Pride and Prejudice – Shelley, Frankenstein – Hopkins – O’Connor – Martin Luther King Jr. – Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment – John Paul II 12th grade (God & Society): – Plato, Republic – Dante, The Divine Comedy – Aristotle, Politics – Augustine, City of God – Aquinas, De Regno – Natural and human law – Machiavelli, Hobbes – Locke, Rousseau – Marx and Engels – Dignitatis Humanae, Evangelium Vitae, Centesimus Annus – John Courtney Murray – Leviticus – Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov – The Declaration of Independence – The Constitution – The Federalist Papers "They gain an in-depth knowledge of Western civilization from Athens, Rome, and Jerusalem through England and the founding of our own country."

Average Russian worker earns $800/month. British worker earns $2,500/month. Looks like Britain wins, right? Here's what each can actually buy: RUSSIA: One-bedroom apartment rent: $200 Utilities (gas, electric, water): $50 Groceries for one person: $150 Public transport monthly pass: $15 Internet: $10 Dinner at restaurant: $8 Doctor visit: $0 (state healthcare) Total monthly costs: $433 Money left: $367 UK: One-bedroom apartment rent: $1,200 Utilities: $180 Groceries: $350 Public transport: $180 Internet: $35 Dinner at restaurant: $25 Doctor visit: $0 (NHS when it works) Total monthly costs: $1,970 Money left: $530 The British worker has $163 more left at the end of the month. After earning triple the salary. That's PPP. That's why GDP in dollars doesn't tell you who can actually afford to live.

Klopt helemaal - helaas.

The full history behind 1989-1991 goes a lot deeper than the overly simplistic narratives of "freedom overcame repression" or "Russia wants to restore the USSR". It was first and foremost about a disaster for everyone involved, primarily because much-needed reforms were very difficult, deeply chaotic and failing in many aspects. Yes, some countries did generally well, particularly the ones bordering the West. Countries further East struggled a lot more in many aspects, and it is increasingly suspected that the decline of the Western middle class accelerated greatly after 1991.

Karl Marx and Adam Smith, despite their differences, approached economics in a similar way — they both understood that economics is not a value-neutral science. According to Marx and Smith, to be an economist is also to be a philosopher.

Funny thing is that Cuba was not allowed to park Russian missiles in their country in 1962. So why should Russia accept NATO troops at its border? Just watch this revealing interaction between Pentagon spokesman John Kirby and journalist Matt Lee.......

Power selects for a specific personality type, and it is not yours. F.A. Hayek spelled this out in 1944. In a centrally planned system, the people who rise are not the most competent or the most honest. They are the most willing to exercise force against strangers, the most comfortable with contradiction, and the most skilled at coalition-building through favors rather than merit. Government filters for the bad ones from the start. The mechanism is straightforward. Political power means controlling resources you did not earn. Capturing that control requires outcompeting rivals who have no ethical constraints. A principled candidate refuses to promise contradictory things to different voter blocs. An unprincipled one does it without blinking. The unprincipled one wins. Repeat this selection pressure across hundreds of electoral cycles and you get the U.S. Congress in 2026: a body where the average member has held office for over a decade, raised millions from interested parties, and delivered almost nothing measurable to the people who voted for them. Bureaucracy compounds the problem. Once entrenched, state agencies attract people who want authority without accountability. You cannot fire most of them. The FDA, the TSA, the Federal Reserve all function this way, staffed by individuals whose career advancement depends on expanding the agency's reach, never on serving you efficiently.

A French engineer who lives quietly in Paris has spent 30 years writing software that the entire internet now runs on without knowing his name. He wrote the code that streams every YouTube video, every Netflix show, every TikTok clip. He wrote the code that runs the virtual servers underneath AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. He calculated more digits of pi than anyone in history. He has no Twitter. He has no marketing. He just keeps shipping. His name is Fabrice Bellard. Here is the story, because almost nobody outside the systems programming world knows what one man has built. Fabrice was born in 1972 in Grenoble, France. He studied at École Polytechnique, the top French engineering school. He never went to Silicon Valley. He never built a startup empire. He just wrote code. In 2000 he started a project called FFmpeg, an open-source multimedia framework for encoding, decoding, and streaming video. He was 28. The project did one thing nobody else had done well. It handled every video and audio format that existed, in one library, on every operating system. He led it himself for years. Today FFmpeg is the invisible engine of the internet. YouTube uses it. Netflix uses it. VLC uses it. Chrome and Firefox use parts of it. Every Android phone, every iPhone, every smart TV, every video editing tool you have ever touched runs FFmpeg somewhere underneath. If you have watched a video on a screen in the last 20 years, Fabrice's code processed it. He was not done. In 2003 he started QEMU, a machine emulator and virtualizer. He wrote it solo until version 0.7.1 in 2005. QEMU lets you run any operating system on any other operating system. It became the foundation of modern virtualization. KVM, the Linux kernel hypervisor, runs on top of QEMU. Every major cloud provider, AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, IBM Cloud, runs virtual machines on infrastructure built around it. The Quick Emulator is the most cited piece of cloud infrastructure code on Earth. He kept going. In 2001 he won the International Obfuscated C Code Contest with a small C compiler that grew into TCC, the Tiny C Compiler. TCC can compile and boot a Linux kernel from source in under 15 seconds. In 2004 he calculated the most digits of pi ever computed at the time, using a personal desktop computer and an algorithm he derived himself called Bellard's formula. In 2011 he wrote a complete PC emulator in pure JavaScript that runs Linux in your browser, a project called JSLinux that engineers still cannot believe is real. In 2019 he released QuickJS, a small but complete JavaScript engine that fits where V8 cannot. In 2021 he released NNCP, a neural network based lossless data compressor that immediately took the lead on the Large Text Compression Benchmark. Then he turned his attention to large language models. He built TextSynth Server, a web server with a REST API for running LLMs locally. He released ts_zip and ts_sms, compression utilities that use language models to compress text and short messages at ratios traditional algorithms cannot reach. He released TSAC, a very low bitrate audio compression system. In December 2025 he released Micro QuickJS, a new JavaScript engine for microcontrollers, separate from QuickJS, designed for environments with almost no memory. Fabrice co-founded a telecom company called Amarisoft in 2012, where he serves as CTO. Amarisoft builds 4G and 5G base station software used by carriers and labs around the world. He has been running it for over a decade while continuing to ship personal projects from his own home page at bellard dot org He has no Twitter. He has no Instagram. He gives almost no interviews. His personal website is a flat list of projects with no styling, no fonts, no marketing copy. Just titles and links. A quiet French engineer who never moved to Silicon Valley wrote the code that quietly runs the internet. He is still shipping.

Iran has made many miscalculations in this war, but perhaps the biggest one so far is that they think an average American is capable of reading 26 pages.
The IRGC has published a 26-page "Letter to the American people." Very little of note in here--a rundown of US crimes, a denunciation of American imperialism, an insistence of Iran's victory in this year's war--though the emphasis on rejecting "evil, deceitful, and violent politicians" hints at November's mid-term elections. img9.irna.ir/d/r2/2026/09/29…

This vision of Britain is literally famous around the world, so her statement seems quite detached from reality. I still grew up with that in the 90s and 00s, with the pub and their ability to be effortlessly cool as the cornerstone of that vision.
They destroyed it and then said it never existed. Do you see what's happening?
