Awesome #science#comic I wrote and Jordan Collver illustrated!
Dive into the world of bacteria and how we can help our immune systems fight the bad ones by messing with their storage of IRON. #sciomm#sciart
What happens when LSU researchers in biology and chemistry tackle the problem of antibiotic resistance? They find innovative new ways, and iron homeostasis pathways, that may serve as the foundation of a future class of drugs! Learn more with our first ever Research Comic! 🦠 @lsuscience@LSUResearch
ALT Mike’s infection isn’t responding to antibiotics. “Bacteria adapt fast,” his doctor says, “but LSU researchers are finding new ways to fight them—by starving them of iron.” Mike pictures his blood cells guarding yellow iron particles as sneaky green bacteria try to steal them. LSU scientists study how bacteria sense and store iron through proteins like ferredoxin and bacterioferritin. A new drug could trap iron in storage, tricking bacteria into thinking they have none and killing them off. Mike leaves hopeful—LSU research could one day save lives like his.
