Grisham is a really underrated corner fit. Lot to like under the hood still. A lot looks similar with Grisham in 25-26 peripherally but results were wildly different.
2025-2026 OFs who have posted better than average: - BB% - K% - ISO - xwOBA - Barrel% Fernando Tatis Juan Soto George Springer Wilyer Abreu Tyler Soderstrom *Trent Grisham* Projected for a 1 year, $14 M deal by ESPN & FanGraphs. Awesome Cubs target/fit for a corner OF spot.

I’m steadfast in my belief that I don’t care if there is a cap/floor, I only care about the facts. A fact nobody on either side would disagree with is that a 50/50 revenue split would have players earning less of the pie than they do now, and I’m unsure how many people know that

MLB is proposing a league minimum of $900K/$1M (500K+ less than what MLBPA is proposing) and no real change for how quickly young players reach free agency, so not sure what is getting redistributed here…
Replying to @JoshuaHowsam
That is true. It’s also true that 91% of current multiyear contracts could have occurred under this proposal. The tradeoff for the remainder is a system in which players make significantly more when they’re younger (and generally more productive). Redistribution of wealth.

Lot of risk in the profile but just really fun unique guy and the Cubs are one of the orgs who really seems to target that
Kaima Taira contract projections: Keith Law (Athletic) - 3y $18m AAV MLB Trade Rumors - 4y, $18m AAV Ben Clemens (FanGraphs) - 3y, $16m AAV Kiley McDaniel (ESPN) - 5 y, $14.5m AAV 5-foot-8, 6.8' extension, 4.9' release height, with a 4S sitting 95.5 mph. 🤤 @MLBNetwork

I don’t think they’ll be signing a Morejon or Bednar to reliever, but I do think one in the 2/$7-11M per year range with leverage upside could be in play. Otherwise it’ll be a ton of low end volume.
Remember getting Aroldis Chapman in 2016? Don’t expect that this offseason... 😬 @sahadevsharma says the Cubs are “very happy with the base that they have,” and aren’t looking to spend big on bullpen help.

Names like Evan Phillips, Bryan Abreu, Jonathan Loaisiga, Antonio Senzetella, JoJo Romero, Kevin Ginkel could make sense. Don’t think they go above that.

My absolute favorite way to take a chance on upside in the rotation here. Glad others are joining in.
The Cubs could pursue lefty reliever Adrian Morejon … as an impact starting pitcher. bleachernation.com/cubs/2026…

My offseason hot take is that the dodgers won’t be that involved on Skubal, but that won’t stop Boras from working overtime to make sure people think they are. Exhibit A 👇
nypost.com/2026/11/03/sports… Mets are very interested in Skubal but cap threat and incumbent Dodgers loom as real hurdles

Only 1 year for full cap compliance is one of the funnier things MLB has ever proposed
Key to MLB's new CBA proposal. It tables a salary cap until 2028 so in theory normal business could be undertaken now, but currently the $180.2M floor/$258.2M ceiling proposal would be firm for 2028, so how crazy could any big-market team go? But MLB stated it "is willing to discuss additional appropriate phase-in timeline & procedures for implementation of the Salary Cap and Floor. Obviously, this could be negotiated further."

Looks like Cubs will have a new man (or woman) in charge of the farm system

Right call to spend this money elsewhere. Name I really like to fill a similar role is Ryan Weiss. Cheaper and optionable but with good stuff. Works from a higher angle than Rea but a similar mix and I think Weiss would really benefit from adding a cutter or slider like Rea.

There are 12 option decisions remaining across baseball. 5 of those are Cubs. Nobody loves a deadline more than Jed Hoyer...
At 5pm Eastern time: 1. 40-man rosters have to be down to 40 or fewer players (no 60-day IL in the offseason) 2. Qualifying offers will have been made 3. All option decisions will have been made 4. The exclusive negotiation window for FA and their current team ends

Taira is the one guy here I expect the Cubs to really push for
These were the players who were posted today: RHP Kaima Taira of the Saitama Seibu Lions (NPB) RHP Hiromi Itoh of the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters (NPB) Infielder Teruaki Sato of the Hanshin Tigers (NPB) Infielder Si-Hwan Roh of the Hanwha Eagles (KBO)

As the Cubs chase upside this offseason while also needing to spread the money around, Taira is a PERFECT fit. Has the unique traits and stuff for real frontside upside but the risks should keep the price down.
I have gone back and forth on Taira, but after seeing some more data, I think Taira has high-end SP2 to low-end SP1 upside. The obvious comp is Joe Ryan, as it's a 4.7' release height and 6.8' ext, pretty much right around where Ryan is, and he shares close to the same mix (gyro SL, SNK, SW, CU, SPL). The only difference is that he has a liftier bridge cutter; his curve isn't as developed, and his release traits might even be more extreme with him being 5'8. The medicals will likely be the deciding factor in what he gets, but I'm all in on Taira.

I’m sure this will receive the same backlash Caleb got…
Christian Watson has popped back out of the ambulance after a trip to the hospital and is going to return tonight. The closest thing to a WWE script I’ve ever seen in the NFL.

This tweet: The Cubs pitching was the worst in baseball Also this tweet: How will the cubs ever replace their pitchers?!?
This is crazy cuz their pitching staff was already worst in MLB this year. What’s the plan to turn this around with half of their personnel on the way out?

If the pitching staff was the worst in baseball, wouldn’t you WANT to replace them?

Clay Holmes is a guy who I really want back. Shouldn't be too expensive given his age and uneven 2026, but remains the great fit he was at the deadline. I expect that he's a solid #2/3 starter still.
Cubs off season will be busy on the mound. Clay Holmes and Matthew Boyd are turning down their player options to become free agents. Shota Imanaga, Kevin Gausman and David Peterson are FA’s as well. Have to rebuild the staff. Guess is 1-2 of above could return.

Peterson would be next on the list. Cubs really unlocked something there in September by leaning on the 4-seam. Would be a really good #4/5 starter and gotta think he enjoyed his time with the Cubs.

Probably the highest floor Jed (or even Theo) has started with when it comes to the bullpen. Hopefully 1-2 arms with leverage upside and then just a spattering of waiver claims, optionable dudes and minor league deals.
Chicago Cubs bullpen right now: Really solid squad here, maybe add one more arm?
