Chromebooks in the Classroom are rarely discussed in the massive push to "protect kids online." Covid ushered in nationwide 1:1 Chromebooks for students as young as kindergarten...KINDERGARTEN!!!! My best friend just visited from Seattle where she is a 2nd grade public school teacher. Kids are distracted, they cannot focus, they cannot simply sit in downtime or boredom. Human teachers are boring - they want the fast pace and vivid colors and sounds of online games. Teachers are having to monitor 20+ students who often have the wrong tabs open, are accessing sites like YouTube instead of the iReady website they're supposed to be on. Yet not a peep about this from lawmakers...or even parents. This is a huge problem that's going to get worse if we don't start addressing it and coming up with balanced solutions. And as the "old guard" of teachers age out and retire the younger teachers will only teach to screens...because that's all they know.

He stood up for one of the greatest issues plaguing our country.

Just a couple of months ago, Discord tried to roll out “age verification.” They contracted with a third party to conduct facial scanning — not just of kids, but also of adults. They decided to launch a teen default setting where they would lock users into a teen-appropriate experience. Which, mind you, if you are an adult who does not opt in, you then get cordoned off into the teen experience. Explain to me how that has anything to do with children’s safety. The only way to get out of that censored version is by scanning your face. What’s more shocking is that Discord made the decision to move forward with this after they had been hacked and 70,000 users had their data stolen.

It’s always the exact same line: “This bill is about protecting children, empowering parents, and bringing accountability to Big Tech.” It doesn’t protect kids. It doesn’t empower parents. It’s literally funded by Big Tech (Meta). The App Store Accountability Act is a massive data grab, a government mandate, a de facto Digital ID.
