Hurts was struck in the leg during an October 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams. An ultrasound several days later reportedly identified a superficial blood clot, and he was initially cleared to play. But follow-up testing raised concerns, and reports published October 19 indicate that Hurts has since been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and bilateral pulmonary emboli. DVT occurs when a clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg. If part of that clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs, it can cause a pulmonary embolism, a potentially life-threatening blockage. Symptoms of a pulmonary embolism can include sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, and coughing up blood. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek emergency medical care. Hurts is reportedly stable and expected to recover, although treatment may keep him out of football for several months.
