They also found that he brought personal guests to ticketed events without paying and pushed for a promotion for a woman he was dating, without disclosing their relationship. He sent that promotion email four days after being notified he was under investigation. Senior officials raised concerns about his conduct toward women in March (he was warned directly on March 25). Taxpayers were then billed nearly $50K through June 25 for an investigation charging $450 an hour for attorney time. While it was underway, Caldwell served as acting governor EIGHTEEN TIMES. These are substantiated workplace and ethics violations, not criminal convictions. Sherrill can’t fire an elected lieutenant governor, but she can demand his resignation. If he refuses, the Assembly can pursue impeachment and the Senate can vote on removal. The legal bill was dumped on us, but the responsibility for leaving him in charge belongs with Madam Governor.
