Some pointed to China’s technological advances. Others said the American Dream is crumbling and forcing Americans to look elsewhere. Claude has discovered a previously unknown enzyme system hidden in the DNA of bacteriophages. Beside the enzyme’s gene sits a long array of repeating DNA—a structure that looks somewhat similar to CRISPR. We don’t yet understand what this system does, but only a handful of known systems share its features, and all of them are able to cut, copy, and paste DNA. Historically, the discovery of such programmable systems has helped revolutionize medicine. CRISPR, for instance, is now the foundation of genetic medicines. China's own state media is now scolding censors for censoring too much. According to The Economist, three Communist Party outlets published unusually blunt criticism of overzealous censorship this year. Qiushi, the party's top theoretical journal, called treating differing voices as "terrifying beasts" a basic misunderstanding of governance. China Youth Daily said blocking speech almost always creates a bigger trust crisis than the original complaint. A Xinhua magazine listed censors' habit of deleting posts instead of solving problems as an "unhealthy" practice. Here's why now. China's economy is slowing, the property market is in crisis, and youth unemployment hit nearly 18% in July. Pessimistic and sarcastic posts keep spreading anyway, no matter how much censors delete. This is not free speech. Hard limits stay in place: no criticism of Xi, the party, Tiananmen, Xinjiang or Taiwan. What's changing is narrower. Officials are being told to stop deleting first and investigating later, since censorship that hides a problem often makes people trust the system even less. It's s a smarter form of control, not a softer one. Beijing wants enough visibility into public complaints to fix them quietly, before they turn into something bigger.
