“the economy has so much inertia” is a very Silicon Valley way of saying we upgraded the technology and somehow companies didn’t instantly rearrange themselves around it lol surprise!

I’m becoming allergic to AI training which is a slightly awkward thing to admit when you run an AI education company. AI training is not useless but I keep seeing teams where people already know enough to get started. They just don’t have the time OR access to the right tools OR permission to experiment OR a manager who wants them to change how the work gets done. And then when AI adoption doesn’t magically happen, the answer is…another workshop. I think we’re starting to confuse an environment/ culture problem with a skills problem.

ChatGPT is pretty bad at telling you where ChatGPT could help. ChatGPT or Claude don’t know what you opened, copied, compared, rewrote or waited on last week. So instead of asking AI to invent use cases, pick one normal workday and reconstruct what you did across your calendar, emails, recent files, Slack threads. Last week I said most AI training is a waste of money, ours included if we taught it the normal way. this is the clearest version of why. @bcherny mapped it for engineering teams. I've swapped the language for everyone who doesnt write code, because the blockers dont change: approvals, then your attention, then reviewing everything it makes, then whether anyone can decide. Training clears the first blocker only and sometimes a bit of the second. Everything after that is ownership. What's getting sold everywhere is the first blocker, priced and packaged like it's all five. Then everyone acts surprised when nothing changes.

Im tired of more AI output being called progress. AI is great but it also made it much easier to dump more of it on everyone else (giving them more work). Before you send: why theyre getting it, what you need, by when. Cant fill those in, dont send it.

If your company made you the “AI person” because you seemed techy, congrats on the second job. You now get to pick the tools, convince legal, train everyone, answer every question and somehow still do your actual role. I do this full-time and still can’t keep up. go easy on yourself.

We sell AI training and most AI training is a waste of money. Ours included, if we taught it the normal way. A client told me last week that our 15 Days of AI (for teams) was the most hands-on AI training they'd done. More than the big expensive one they've already sat through from one of the largest software companies on earth. we're not smarter than a company that size, we just refuse to teach the tools. And their team kept stressing that they got to use AI on real work, not just hear about it.

If you're a founder too, yeah, we're living the dream. We're optimistic, have the most control, and the least worried about layoffs. Also true: we're tired in a way that doesn't switch off. You're shipping, you're excited, everythings technically fine, and there's no off button anywhere. It's called smiling exhaustion. 71% of founders say we're optimistic about our careers and nearly half of us are burned out at the same time. Thats not a contradiction anymore, that's just the job. Yeah, "just management" is right, and it's about to get very real. The second you tag an agent in Slack and hand it a job, you're not prompting anymore, you're managing a teammate. Context, limits, checking its work, deciding when to trust it... that's how everyone on the team becomes a first time manager overnight, ready or not.

100% AI adoption isn't the win you think it is. In most companies I'm in right now, AI use is wildly uneven. Engineers are flying. Sales dips in and out. Finance and admin haven't been given a reason to yet. Average it all out and you get a number that looks great on a board slide. 96%. 100%. Whatever round figure you want. The L&D leads I talk to are starting to feel it. They've hit the adoption number leadership asked for, and the work product hasn't visibly changed. Usage is up but the work isn't. What matters is what your team can do now that they couldn't six months ago. If you can't answer that, more licences won't fix that.

I don't think all these AI layoff headlines are helping anyone. Each one triggers the same wave of panic. So here's some stuff I think you can do to feel a bit more in control. Basically, keep panicking, or do these 👇 1. Look at the hiring data, not the headlines. PM openings are at their highest in 3 years. Companies adopting AI properly are hiring more people, not fewer (@lennysan). The panic is louder than the numbers. 2. Notice how your own CEO talks about AI. Last week, Intuit's CEO refused to blame AI for his 3,000 layoffs. ClickUp's framed his 22% cut as a 100x org manifesto. Your leadership's framing is doing more work than any AI training will. 3. Use AI every single day on real work. Marketers using AI monthly: 41% effectiveness gain. Weekly: 75%. Daily: 93%. The jump from weekly to daily is bigger than the one from never to weekly. (@asana × @AnthropicAI research.) 4. Download Codex and Claude Code. If you've been waiting for the right moment to get hands-on with the agentic tools, it's now. 5. Ask AI: "this was my job, how can you help me automate it with skills?" Best prompt going around right now (@clairevo). Maps your actual workflow into something AI can build alongside you. 6. Ship a few of those skills to Github. Even the rough ones. The point is having something visible that proves you’ve been doing the work. 7. Build a quick portfolio site. One page. An agent per skill explaining what it does. Lovable, v0, Claude Design. Pick one and ship it. 8. Search "AI for [your job]" and message the founders. There's probably 5-10 startups doing it. Try their product, form a real opinion, message them. They're hiring people with strong opinions. 9. Don't apply to a thousand jobs. Holly Lee, ex-Amazon/Google/Meta recruiter: when the market picks up, someone hiring you will ask "what did you do during that time?" You can't say "I applied a lot." Make whatever gap you've got visibly count. 10. Stop trying to have an AI strategy. Build an AI habit. The teams I've worked with that move don't have strategies. They have people who open Claude every morning and use it on the work that was already on their plate.
