🚨 New COLDCARD firmware is available: 5.6.1 for Mk4/Mk5 and 1.5.1Q for Q.
This release follows three weeks of sustained review since our July 31 hotfix. We continue to acknowledge the customers who suffered severe financial losses from the seed-generation attack.
Every newly generated seed now requires one source of user entropy: at least 65 key presses with unpredictable timing, 50 physical dice rolls, or 128 physical coin flips. This input is combined with fresh entropy from the STM32 TRNG, SE1, and SE2.
The release also adds staged-PSBT verification immediately before signing, stronger USB and firmware-update boundaries, improved Delta Mode isolation, active-wallet backup fixes, stronger RNG initialization and fault checks, safer SIGHASH defaults, and many additional security and correctness improvements.
Important: Updating does not repair an existing seed generated on affected firmware. If the advisory applies to your seed, update your device, generate and verify a new seed, then move your funds.
We strongly recommend that all Mk4, Mk5, and Q users update and verify the signed firmware download.
Thank you to every researcher who reported issues, reproduced edge cases, reviewed fixes, and helped make this release stronger.

A 2-hour flight turned into a 2-hour conversation about Bitcoin. 😂🟠
The guy sitting next to me noticed my Bitcoin jacket and eventually started asking questions.
And not surface-level questions either.
Why is Bitcoin pumping right now?
When do I think real adoption happens?
Where do I see Bitcoin going long term?
How could he accept Bitcoin at the business he owns?
Why does any of this matter?
We pretty much talked Bitcoin the entire flight.
By the end, he was making Bitcoin jokes, telling me, “Now you’ve got me thinking about it,” and reading about hyperbitcoinization because he noticed the keychain on my backpack.
His son, who looked about my age, had his headphones in the entire time. Meanwhile his dad was getting orange pilled in the seat next to him. 😂
Before we landed, I grabbed a piece of paper and wrote down every resource I could think of off the top of my head; books, places to learn, ways to buy, self-custody options, Bitcoin Magazine, BMTV, conferences, everything.
Maybe I’ll never talk to him again. Maybe he goes home, keeps learning, buys his first sats and eventually teaches his family.
Who knows.
But THIS is one of my favorite parts of Bitcoin.
Sometimes all it takes is wearing the orange, being willing to have the conversation, and letting someone get curious.
Shoutout to @kaylaparrilla for making a jacket that basically turns me into a walking “ask me about Bitcoin” sign. 😂🧡
