Lorenzo Salgado Araujo llamó a Houston su hogar durante 35 años. El martes, un agente de ICE le disparó y lo mató. Su familia se enteró por un video antes de que alguien tuviera la decencia de tocar a su puerta y avisarles. La Ciudad de Nueva York está del lado de la familia Salgado y exige una investigación completa e independiente. A ellos, y a cada familia inmigrante que hoy vive con miedo en esta ciudad: no están solos. Compartimos su dolor y seguiremos a su lado hasta que haya justicia. Es hora de abolir ICE.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo called Houston home for 35 years. On Tuesday, an ICE agent shot and killed him. His family learned of his death from a video before anyone bothered to knock on their door. New York City stands with the Salgado family in demanding a full, independent investigation and real accountability. To the Salgado family and any immigrant family in this city living in fear: we grieve with you and we will continue to stand beside you in the pursuit of justice. Abolish ICE.

On June 19, 1865, African American communities in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom from slavery — two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect. For 161 years, Juneteenth has been a day of remembrance for the freedom that was delayed. It is also a celebration of the joy and resilience that flourished despite that delay. The contributions of African Americans, whose struggle for freedom shaped our nation, are immeasurable. Yet too many Black families continue to bear the brunt of an affordability crisis that has pushed them out of the neighborhoods and communities they've built. True freedom has a tangible impact on daily life: the ability to afford housing, earn a living wage, put food on the table, support a family, and create a future for generations to come. As we celebrate today, we must recommit ourselves to ensuring this freedom is fully realized. Happy Juneteenth, New York City.

We recently filed a Prop A ordinance to keep Houston police focused on solving crime — not doing the job of ICE. Right now, officers are required to wait up to 30 minutes for ICE to arrive during routine stops. This ordinance ends that practice, reduces unnecessary detention and family separation, and brings transparency to how often HPD is interacting with ICE. Because of the City Attorney's opinion, we weren’t allowed to include one key provision. We strongly disagree and we'll continue to fight for it. Even so, we’re moving forward because Houston families cannot afford to wait. Call your Council Member and the Mayor, and urge them to support this ordinance.
