Cut too deep by hand in granite and you have made a mistake that took you hours to make. Overcuts exist on hard stone statues in Egypt. Which means the mistake was fast, which also means the cut was fast. 馃摲 @UnchartedX1

Completely missing the point... The measurement of error far exceeds what you could make with hand tools Make a mistake with a hand saw & the error could be 1cm Make a mistake with mechanical machinery & the error could be 5 inches The errors prove it couldn't be hand tools

this is just not true. it is quite possible to accidentally make a cut too deep and not even be able to notice that it's overcut until a different process months later cuts the stone from a different direction to intersect the initial work. quite easy to be 'off' with hand tools.

Pic to help you understand The size of this cutting error makes it impossible to made with hand tools, because you would notice the error way sooner than pictured, due to the time it takes to cut it by hand. This error in the picture happened quickly.

now see this one is definitely a more interesting case. it's definitely an outlier how far the error proceeded. Alternate explanations involve the discovery of a fault in the stone that made continuing to cut risky for the structural integrity of the box itself.
