This is why I wanted Alonso at Chelsea too. The mentality to compete now instead of asking for 4–5 years. Chelsea should never be a club that settles for less. 💙🔥
One of the biggest reasons I wanted Xabi Alonso at Chelsea was his mentality. 💙
Maresca spoke about needing three, four or even five years to compete for the biggest trophies. Alonso is already talking about how different this Chelsea team could look by May. That is the ambition I want to hear.
Nobody expects miracles overnight, but we should not need years of lowered expectations before demanding progress. Give us exciting football, clear improvement and a manager who believes Chelsea belong among the best.
Alonso understands the standards of this club. That is why I wanted him here. 💙🔥

Chelsea have enough talent in this squad to compete with any team in Europe. The biggest question has never been the quality of our players, but whether we can find the consistency and defensive discipline to turn that quality into trophies. 💙

We are taking nothing less than 50m for gusto 📌 . And that’s the best decision of gusto and the club because I don’t see him playing under Xabi that much

Caicedo needs the right midfield partner to bring out the best in him. Kante had Matic covering him, which gave him the freedom to influence games. With the likes of Alex Scott, Lamine Camara and Pablo Barrios linked with Chelsea, whichever one we get needs to help build that same balance in midfield. 💙
Kanté could make that run because he knew Matic was covering. Without that support, he would have had to think twice about going forward and leaving the defence exposed.
Give Caicedo a partner, the same way Kanted had a partner, if he is to be out Kante.

The real progress is how we respond when things go wrong. Chelsea need a mentality that doesn’t crumble after losing . 💙
The real test of Chelsea’s progress is what happens after a bad result. It is easy to believe in a team when everyone is playing well. I want to see us concede first, face a difficult spell and still play like we expect to win.
That is the mentality I want back. Not a team that never struggles, but one that does not fall apart when it does. 💙
