Samuel Alito says he's considering retirement. The 76-year-old told CBS News it's "something that somebody at my age has to think about every term," and he'll weigh it again after next year. Two months ago he shut the talk down. He told the Wall Street Journal in August, "Obviously I'm here for another term." The real clock is the Senate. Republicans control it now. If they lose it in November's midterms, Trump can't swap a 76-year-old for a young conservative without Democratic votes. x.com/EveryoneKnws1/status/2…

ALITO STAYS, BUT WILL RETHINK IT EVERY YEAR Justice Samuel Alito, 76, says he can still make a valuable contribution, so he is staying this term and will reconsider every year. Some conservatives wanted him to step down while Republicans hold the Senate, and Justice Clarence Thomas is 78. Back in August, Alito called the people pushing him to retire "vultures." His book comes out October 6. It's his seat and his call. Ruth Bader Ginsburg waited too and lost any say over who replaced her. NOW EVERYONE KNOWS

The NFL suspended 49ers owner Jed York six games and fined him $500,000. First owner it's ever punished for getting caught in a prostitution sting. Robert Kraft got nabbed in a 2019 Florida spa sting. No fine, no games, nothing. Kraft's charges got tossed when a judge ruled the spa video inadmissible. He was never convicted. York pleaded no contest in Ohio and was found guilty of two misdemeanors. The league punishes a conviction, not the act.

French intelligence and PM Sebastien Lecornu say the school riots burning across France aren't spontaneous teen anger. They call it a manoeuvre run by Jean-Luc Melenchon's hard-left party, La France Insoumise. 83 cops hurt Wednesday. Nearly 1,900 detained. 400-plus schools shut Friday. A principal and his deputy doused with petrol at a Marseille high school. Melenchon told his activists on Sept 28 to physically "place yourselves between" the kids and the police "wherever you can." Marine Le Pen calls it violence "organised by professionals." The cause they're riding: France's 2026 budget cuts 4,018 teaching jobs to hit a 44 billion euro austerity target. The Education Ministry says it's non-negotiable.

Newly unsealed body cam shows the whole Luigi Mangione arrest. A McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, December 9, 2024. He handed cops a fake ID reading "Mark Rosario." They pulled a gun magazine wrapped in his underwear, then found the pistol that killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in his backpack. It's public now because CNN petitioned to unseal it after Mangione pleaded guilty in August and admitted he shot Thompson. A federal judge had already taken the death penalty off the table. Sentencing's December 18.

Lexie Hull got dumped to the floor in Game 3 and the refs called the foul on her. The player who got dumped. Replay shows Brianna Turner hooked an arm under Hull's and took her down. Off-ball, second quarter, in a game that ended Indiana's season. The Fever went to challenge it. The WNBA replay center said the window had already closed. Once play resumes the call is locked in, so the worst whistle of the night stood with nobody able to fix it. Las Vegas won by 11. Caitlin Clark's year is over.

Picayune. "Extra Mild" on the pack, black caporal underneath, the same leaf that fills a Gauloise. Only American cigarette ever cut from it. They say one would put you on the floor.

Travis Etienne landed on IR this week with a hamstring. The Saints paid the Louisiana native $14 million this year to come home and be their lead back, and three games in he's got 128 rushing yards. Out until November 8 at the earliest.

A man jumped off a 7-story roof in Far Rockaway, Queens. Inside his apartment, he'd stabbed his girlfriend to death. Face, neck, chest, abdomen. He'd already slashed his own wrists and couldn't finish it. The jump was the second try. Her name was Pheona Premraj. 31. x.com/darktriadtc/status/210…

Captain Marat Mambetov, 25, died Thursday when a Russian missile hit his MiG-29 over eastern Ukraine. Flight commander of the "Ghost of Kyiv" brigade. He ejected and didn't make it. The jet he flew first flew in 1977. The Western fighters meant to replace it still aren't here. Belgium pledged F-16s in May 2024. Delivery now slips to 2027 through 2029, because Belgium won't give up its own jets until its F-35s arrive. More than half the F-16s Ukraine did get sit in maintenance.
On 1 October 2026, a Ukrainian Air Force MiG-29 was shot down by a Russian missile during combat mission on one of the front lines. The pilot, kapitan Marat Mambetov of the 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade, ejected but did not survive.

A 27-year-old dual UK-Iranian national got arrested Thursday in Westminster on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act over the RAF Fairford incident. First Iranian-linked suspect in the whole case. The five grabbed near the base Sunday were all British, 23 to 25, out of London. Petrol in the three vans, no explosives. Every one of them out on bail by Monday. Iran got blamed a week ago. Until Thursday the only people held were British nationals, every one already cut loose.
Five men caught heading for RAF Fairford on Sunday were out on police bail by Monday. One day in custody. No explosives were confirmed found. UK police can hold a terror suspect 14 days without charge, but to charge someone with preparing an attack prosecutors need proof of intent, not just masked men near three vans. So they walk on conditions while forensics run. Fairford is the Cotswolds base US B-1s and B-52s flew from to hit Iran this spring. The biggest bomber buildup there since the Cold War. In July Iran's Revolutionary Guard called British bases a "legitimate target." The Telegraph says police think Iran is the likeliest state behind it. Counterterror commander Laurence Taylor: "this does not mean that the investigation is over."

Rick Ross arrested in Miami Beach, felony battery by strangulation. Her police report has him grabbing Jazzma Kendrick by the ponytail, slamming her into a wall, splitting her lip. $6,000 bond, back out the same morning.

Felony battery by strangulation. His ex, Jazzma Kendrick, posted the injury photos. That's the guy the celebrity pitch was trying to speed out the door.

A 22-year-old went down on synthetic kratom in Oxford Thursday around 5 a.m. Paramedics brought him back. Third overdose in the community in two weeks. Mississippi already thinks it handled this. The state capped the opioid-like compound 7-OH in 2025. Lafayette County banned kratom outright back in 2021. The DEA moved in July to put the exact analogs these pills carry on Schedule I. The products keep dropping people anyway. SMAX and the ones like it pack mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15 and 7-OH. The chemists reformulate to sit outside whatever molecule the law just named, so every ban lands on last year's product. That's why the narcotics unit working the two Ole Miss student deaths is now asking the legislature for brand-new hearings instead of enforcing the three bans already on the books.
On Thursday, October 1st, the Oxford Police Department responded to a suspected overdose early this morning involving a 22-year-old individual at a residence on Sweetgum Lane. Officers responded around 5 a.m. after the individual was found unresponsive. Emergency medical personnel were able to revive the individual, who was alert and oriented when transported by ambulance for further medical care. The individual is expected to be OK. The individual is not a student, and this incident is not student-related. During the investigation, officers learned that the individual had synthetic kratom products in their possession. Based on statements provided to investigators, there is currently no indication that the products were purchased in the Oxford area. The Oxford Police Department, working with the Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Unit, is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Oxford Police Department is once again warning the public about the serious and potentially deadly dangers associated with synthetic kratom products. Synthetic and manufactured kratom products can contain powerful and unpredictable substances. This incident is not connected to the recent death investigations ongoing in our community. The department also wants to recognize the emergency medical personnel who responded to this incident and provided immediate care. Their quick response and lifesaving actions helped ensure the individual received the medical attention they needed. The Oxford Police Department encourages anyone experiencing or witnessing a suspected overdose to call 911 immediately.

Pike tortured a 19-year-old, crushed her skull, kept a piece of it in her pocket. 30 years of appeals, the family finally gets to Nashville, and the state can't finish the job. Two doses, now she's in a hospital bed.
👀 COLLEEN SLEMMER’S STEPFATHER REACTS AFTER CHRISTA PIKE SURVIVED TENNESSEE’S EXECUTION ATTEMPT A Facebook account identified as Raul Martinez, Colleen’s stepfather, posted a blunt reaction after the failed execution. He thanked donors who helped the family travel to Nashville and made clear just how angry and devastated they are that, after nearly 30 years, the case still isn’t over. The frustration is obvious:

Hello everyone, this is Vic‘s grandson. It is with a very heavy heart that this tweet gets sent out to all of Vic‘s followers. Vic has unfortunately passed away. Our beloved conductor has sent out his last train and is now on his final rocket flight. My family and I would like to thank each and every one of you for following Vic and keeping him company and giving him a sense of community. He really loved doing this and feeling like he was bringing people together and helping to connect new people on the platform. It was very important to him and he was always very happy to know that he was able to help smaller accounts meet more like-minded people. This will be the last posting from this account but I hope you all can continue to keep Vic’s message going for his love of country, love for humanity, love in God, and love for his friends and family. Tennessee tried to execute Christa Pike Wednesday night and couldn't finish the job. Two doses of pentobarbital. Forty minutes after the last one she was still awake, still had a heartbeat, still snoring. Curtain dropped twice. Media witnesses walked out before anyone told them if she was dead. Ambulances at the gate. The death warrant ran out at midnight and she was still breathing. Pike, 50, carved a pentagram into 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer and kept a piece of her skull. First woman Tennessee had tried to execute in over 200 years. The man running the needle was Dr. Mark Fowler. Same doctor who botched Tony Carruthers in May, when the team stuck him more than a dozen times over 90 minutes and gave up. A court had already forced Tennessee to admit Fowler would be back in the chamber. She's still alive.

Trump says the last American troops are out of Iraq. About 2,500 gone, Erbil Air Base emptied Wednesday. Iraq's calling it "Sovereignty Day." The mission didn't end though. CENTCOM moved the anti-ISIS task force next door to Jordan, and hundreds of US troops are still in Syria. The September 30 deadline wasn't new either. Biden and Iraq's prime minister inked it in 2024. Trump ran out the clock and took shots at Bush, Obama and Biden on the way out.

The Senate blocked a ban on members of Congress buying individual stocks Wednesday, 53-47. Not one of the 47 Democrats voted to advance it. Banning congressional stock trading has been a Democratic campaign line for years. Ossoff and Kelly wrote their own bill to do it. Spanberger built a whole one around it. Handed a floor vote six weeks before the midterms, all 47 said no. The reasons they gave: the bill lets members keep the stocks they already own, and Republicans bolted a voter ID rider onto it.
