It is welcome the Garvaghy Road residents group have abandoned the decades long refusal to mediate, and also broke free from the shackles of Sinn Fein who ruled mediation “off the table”. They have now, in a significant concession, sought an international mediator. It may of course be observed this marked change in attitude has only come about once the direction of travel became apparent. But in any event, it is welcome nonetheless. However, this provides no justification under Article 11 (2) for interfering with the right to peaceful assembly in respect of the current application. The Parades Commission will be quickly disabused of any nothin that a ‘jam tomorrow’ approach will be accepted. This notification must be determined now, on its own merits. The Portadown District are very confident that if the law is properly applied (whether by the Commission doing it themselves as they must or a court correcting it) then the outcome is not even a close call or finely balanced. It is crystal clear.
Only an international figure can mediate on the Drumcree parade dispute - and it could take months. According to Breandán Mac Cionnaith of the Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition.
