It’s hard for me to even classify Resident Evil as a video game adaptation when it has so little to do with the games it’s adapting. As a horror movie, it’s very good; maybe even great. As a Resident Evil adaptation, it’s extremely poor. No mention of the T-Virus, no iconic monsters, no nothing. This feels like a spec script for a completely different horror movie that would only get made if it slapped the Resident Evil name on top of it. I fundamentally disagree with the mindset that creatives don’t have to be faithful to the source material because it’s a video game. This doesn’t happen with adaptations of William Shakespeare, novels or hell, now even comic books. The film industry still does not fully respect the video game medium and we still have a lot of work to do to prove that video games are art. Cregger did make a good movie that has ignited interest in the Resident Evil name on film, but this simply isn’t a Resident Evil film. As a horror movie: 4/5 As a Resident Evil adaptation: 1/5
