The Future Economy Is Under Construction
Don't believe me? Just look at this list of Musk Company construction projects:
Thank you
@grok for providing this list.
The full Grimes County Terafab is the one over $50 billion — filings put later phases as high as about $119 billion — so that one is out. The first phase is about $16.8 billion, so it stays. Everything below is a build, expansion, or site start, not a finished factory.
**Tesla**
- Giga Texas Optimus factory, Austin north campus. Ground broken late March 2026; steel nearing the north perimeter beam as of mid-September; concrete on upper floors. Part of a 5.2 million sq ft north-side expansion. Production target has been discussed for 2027.
- Giga Texas advanced-technology chip fab (Terafab precursor). Ground broken in April on the north campus; first steel on the center section by September 30. Research and low-volume wafers, not the Grimes plant.
- Giga Texas Cortex 2 extension, water-recycle plant, and electrical switchyard work, same campus. Cortex 1 is already running; Cortex 2 is aimed at much higher power.
- Cybercab production inside Giga Texas. Public Cybercab rides started in Austin on September 3; the line is an expansion of the existing factory, not a new site.
- Project Crystal Sun, solar-cell plant near Needville, Fort Bend County. About $10.1 billion, still conceptual as of late September. Construction could start before year-end; operations talked about for 2029.
- Giga Nevada Semi volume line. Volume production and customer deliveries were reported in September. This is a ramp inside the existing plant more than a new shell.
- Fremont Optimus pilot line. Gen 3 units have been coming off a pilot line since around January; the building is a conversion, not a new campus.
- Gigafactory Mexico, Santa Catarina. Still paused. No construction progress.
**Tesla and SpaceX**
- Terafab phase 1, Grimes County, on the old Gibbons Creek power-plant site. Confirmed August 6. About $16.8 billion first phase, more than 100 million sq ft at full build. Texas filings list a December 1, 2026 construction start and completion by the end of 2028. Chips for Optimus, Cybercab, and orbital compute. The later-phase $119 billion figure is the one excluded.
**SpaceX**
- Starbase Gigabay, Boca Chica. Structure complete in August; bridge-crane sections arriving. Vertical assembly for a higher Starship rate.
- Roberts Road Gigabay, Florida. Exterior nearly done after about 18 months; interior systems and work stands still going in.
- SLC-37, Cape Canaveral. Tower 37A stacked with the newer roof on; 37B piles done, tower not up yet. East Coast Starship debut site.
- New 444-acre site next to Starbase. Annexed this summer; walls going up by late September. Purpose not disclosed. Heavy foundations and a planned gas line.
- Gigasat, Bastrop. About 11 million sq ft for AI1 orbital-compute satellites. Still a plan tied to the same late-September infrastructure push.
- Second Starbase, Louisiana. Named by SpaceX on September 28 alongside Terafab and Gigasat. No public site plan or cost yet.
**xAI, now under SpaceX**
- Colossus, Memphis. Operational and still expanding. A third building is in the plan toward about 2 GW. Colossus 2 was reported around 550,000 GPUs in late September (about 110,000 GB200 and 440,000 GB300).
Not on this list: ordinary service centers, Superchargers, and Starlink gateways. Those are construction, but they are repeats, not company-scale projects.
Not included is the future Tesla Robovan. Construction of the line and/or factory has not been announced.
