Surprised Vogt, as a former catcher, allowed a young reliever in Espino—or any reliever—to work through a high-leverage spot to end an inning, then sit and return to the mound after the adrenaline wore off. It almost always leads to setting up runs in the next frame with hitters reaching base early in the next frame. Yet managers continue doing it, especially those who weren’t former catchers and have less feel for that aspect of the game. Then Vogt does it again the next frame after Herrin gets out of the mess Espino left without going down 2 runs, Vogt sends him back out to start the inning, and it sets up a big inning and sinks the Guardians in Game 4. I’d say even relievers who are viewed as multi-inning relievers shouldn’t be seen as an automatic to sit and come back out to start another inning in the postseason unless they’ve had prior October success with it, and thus have learned to work through that adrenaline drop—it’s a real thing. —Vogt should’ve been more proactive and lifted the kid after the first pitch to Simpson, high and away and uncompetitive, after already walking Aranda to lead off the inning. That mistake led to the game unraveling for Cleveland tonight. @45PedroMartinez @JimmyRollins11 @cgrand3 #ALCS @TNTSportsUS @BAndersonPxP

Mariano Rivera entered the 2008 All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium with one out in the ninth and worked 1.2 scoreless innings. The game eventually went 15 innings before the American League won 4-3. Even an exhibition in his own ballpark found a way to give Rivera late-inning pressure. The setting made it feel almost like a Yankees game had briefly broken out inside the All-Star Game. twitter.com/MLBVault/status/…

Billy Martin gives Reggie Jackson a piggyback ride, joking around before Game 5 of the 1977 World Series. (Photo by Neil Leifer/Sports Illustrated via Getty Images) The Yankees' manager and his mercurial slugger — whose feud defined the '77 season — share a rare light moment. The next night, Jackson would hit three home runs in Game 6 against the Dodgers to earn the name "Mr. October" and seal the championship. ⚾ Martin and Jackson — the most volatile duo in baseball history? 👇️

In 1976 the Yankees hadn’t been to the World Series in 12 years, the longest they had gone without a Fall Classic appearance since their first appearance in 1921 OTD 50 years ago, all that changed with one big swing when Chris Chambliss crushed a walk-off home run in the decisive Game 5 of the ALCS to give the @Yankees their 30th American League pennant

🇺🇸 SCOTT BESSENT JUST POSTED THIS: Dear Senator Elizabeth Warren: I have received your October 7 letter, which adds to the mounting body of evidence of your complete paucity of knowledge about financial markets. Rather than take my suggestion of studying introductory economics, you have continued your letter-writing crusade and participation in tabloid fodder about the Treasury Department. Unfortunately, it is difficult to treat your concerns as sincere. As the federal funds rate climbed from near zero to its highest level in 22 years, with inflation hitting a 40-year high, you were a cheerleader for the Biden Administration’s reckless spending. You blamed the economic consequences on the Federal Reserve, rather than your own irresponsible fiscal policies. Your view of the economy depends on who occupies the White House, but your woeful understanding of the issues is consistent. The “interventions” you describe as “unprecedented” have been underway since May 2024. The buyback program has been well received by market participants in bolstering Treasury liquidity, which reduces market volatility, increases the convenience yield of Treasury securities and ensures the best value for the taxpayer. The continued enhancements optimize Treasury market liquidity in primary and secondary markets. The U.S. Treasury market’s liquidity and performance versus global peers is evidence. While you voted for a $5 trillion tax hike on everyday Americans, the Working Families Tax Cuts continue to deliver for families and workers across the country. The average refund this filing season was over $3,400, an increase of 11 percent over the previous year. More than 30 million workers claimed No Tax on Overtime, more than 7 million claimed No Tax on Tips, and more than 37 million seniors claimed their enhanced deduction. More than 34 million families claimed the permanently enhanced Child Tax Credit, and millions of families are utilizing Trump Accounts to unlock a new savings vehicle for children. All of which you voted against. These results are made possible by the employees of the Department of the Treasury, who are working around the clock for the American people. Unsurprisingly, you have responded by criticizing their dedication and aptitude for the job in a recent interview.¹ Despite your malign characterization, the Domestic Finance team you alluded to in your interview is fully staffed relative to historical levels. It is ironic that you have voted against every presidential appointee for a position at Treasury, no matter how impressive the qualifications for the role. Given your newfound interest in Department personnel, I challenge you to reverse course and thoughtfully engage with future nominees and support their confirmation. Finally, my offer of a Foreign Exchange for Dummies tutorial still stands and if you receive a passing grade on the Yale metric, not the Harvard curve, I would be happy to also include a Fixed Income for Dummies. Sincerely, Scott Bessent Then he finished with a handwritten note ✍️ Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day in advance to you and your family. 💀

Mantle had a well-known temper about his own at-bats. Teammates used to say he was harder on himself than any manager could've been, so fuming over BP swings that don't even count is basically him in his most honest form. Same intensity that produced 536 home runs, just aimed inward for once. twitter.com/nut_history/stat…
