Tomorrow would have been my father's 75th birthday. I never met him. He died three days after I was born. In 2021 I wrote about grieving a stranger. I've changed my mind about some of it. Today's #Monticello is out. monticello.substack.com/p/fr…

It’s just genuinely disconcerting that the American president from the party of Reagan and Lincoln is like “yeah Russia and China are the countries I want to partner with.” Decline is a fucking choice man and we have chosen it.

"Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine. They haven't been doing much." - President Trump, earlier today
A horrific Russian strike in the Kharkiv region. A “shahed” struck people directly – in a park near an ordinary café. Pure atrocity. Six people were killed, including children. A little girl was killed in a stroller – her name was Angelina, she was just over a year old, born in August 2025… Her mother’s name was Inna. She died in the hospital… Another girl who was killed was 11 years old. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Another 14 people were injured, including six more children. I am grateful to everyone who supports Ukraine under these circumstances and helps us shoot down “shaheds,” shoot down missiles, and stop Russian assaults. These are horrific photos, but behind them are shattered lives and the truth about this war. Lives must be protected. Ukraine needs air defense. You can't think about making money with Russia as long as it continues its asinine war. We ask that sanctions on Russia stay in place as long as the killings continue. We ask America to be strong, and we ask it to apply the Lindsey Graham law. We ask Europe to continue its support. We ask that everything possible be done to bring peace and guarantee security. Ukraine wants peace. It is Russia that has insisted on continuing the killing all this time. The world has enough strength to stop the war. That strength must finally be used – against the murderers.

The irritating thing is that this guy, and to some extent, his entire generation, really do think that they're the victims in all this, the people getting screwed. When literally no generation in the history of this planet has ever been treated as well on a relative basis.

The Florida GOP is doing a tele-townhall with DeSantis and Uthmeier. DeSantis just claimed there's no reason for local govt to worry about Amendment 3 making them have to fire cops, saying it is just to cut "wasteful" stuff and promising that he would use a "grant" to cover any law enforcement cuts. 1) Not sure the governor gets to issue grants like that on his own 2) DeSantis won't be governor after January so he can't make this promise. 3) If Am 3 gets approved, it is IN THE STATE CONSTITUTION forever until repealed 4) Anyone who does have the legal power to do this and is promising it, it's not legally binding in the way a freaking constitutional amendment is DeSantis is in fact exaggerating the "waste" and of course not mentioning how many sheriffs (including staunch conservatives) have spoken out against how bad Amendment 3 is VOTE NO ON AMENDMENT 3

For the first time in 14 years, Indiana Republicans see a real chance the monopoly goes up in smoke with the SOS race. And they’re behaving and campaigning like it. They’re doing everything wrong. Including this latest fight backing exclusion of Ballard and Shillings from debate.

The doctors told him that he was not allowed to sleep because the blood clots made it unsafe so he was kept up all night and allowed to play a National Football League game in the afternoon? How does this make any sense?
Jalen Hurts was in the hospital the night before the Eagles game in London and did not sleep, per doctors orders. He was in the hospital in the middle of the night and played through all of that. All they knew at that time was that he had a superficial small blood clot.

I’m firmly in the camp if you have to stay awake for 36 hours before kickoff so you don’t die from a blood clot you should probably skip playing that game.

In hindsight it's strange to think that the guy who took Anthony Richardson #4 overall and gave up two #1s for Sauce Gardner could he out of a job but that's the harsh world in which we now live. #Colts

In his previous 9 seasons as the #Colts GM, Chris Ballard never won a division title. Had one playoff win. Collapsed to 1-8 to end last season. And don't have a first-round pick.
From @GMFB: The #Colts have finally moved on from GM Chris Ballard, a rare midseason GM firing.

A lot has been made of “declaring martial law.” I don’t see the point; the real nightmare scenario, the one that should keep you up at night, is the one where the suspension of the Constitution requires no such thing, and people carry on with their lives, going to Costco, celebrating the holidays, then waiting until January to see if we maybe still have a country, or what. Compliance and apathy of the same grade observable by people waiting to see if that new chicken chain their cousin likes is going to open at the mall.

It's the dream of Libertarians and white boomers in Florida to have their local fire department take payment via CashApp before putting out the fire at your house. Which they will get to via dirt roads that will be voluntarily maintained just because.

There's something truly wrong with K-12 education content when people don't know: 1. That they only pay in around 37% of what they get out of Social Security, so it's not "their money" only but it's on the backs of current generations and 2. That taxes pay for things they use!
