This rings very true. @cameron and I grew up playing classical piano and entering recitals where you'd be judged on your performance of pieces by Chopin, Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Schubert, etc. When we'd check-in at each recital, they'd think we were lost because we were pretty much the only white, non-first generation Americans there. Almost all the other participants were sons and daughters of APAC immigrants.
I've heard before that SONY, a Japanese company, made the play length of a CD 74 minutes, so it could fit Beethoven’s 9th symphony (74min) on one CD, instead of two. In America we talk about 10,000 hours as the time it takes to master your craft. In Japan that's a rookie. They talk about 30,000 hours. All of this is culture. It is what a culture values and what it rewards.
No culture fosters more creativity, innovation, and better risk-taking than American culture. That is why we have the best builders and produce the best companies in the world. If we placed as much emphasis on STEM, chess, classical music, and other highly technical and intellectual pursuits for kids early on and rewarded and praised the kids who excelled in these areas as much as we do those who excel in sports, celebrity, and influencing, I think our culture would be much stronger and totally unbeatable. This our choice as a country and a culture to make.
The reason top tech companies often hire foreign-born & first-generation engineers over “native” Americans isn’t because of an innate American IQ deficit (a lazy & wrong explanation). A key part of it comes down to the c-word: culture. Tough questions demand tough answers & if we’re really serious about fixing the problem, we have to confront the TRUTH:
Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long (at least since the 90s and likely longer). That doesn’t start in college, it starts YOUNG.
A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers.
A culture that venerates Cory from “Boy Meets World,” or Zach & Slater over Screech in “Saved by the Bell,” or ‘Stefan’ over Steve Urkel in “Family Matters,” will not produce the best engineers.
(Fact: I know *multiple* sets of immigrant parents in the 90s who actively limited how much their kids could watch those TV shows precisely because they promoted mediocrity…and their kids went on to become wildly successful STEM graduates).
More movies like Whiplash, fewer reruns of “Friends.” More math tutoring, fewer sleepovers. More weekend science competitions, fewer Saturday morning cartoons. More books, less TV. More creating, less “chillin.” More extracurriculars, less “hanging out at the mall.”
Most normal American parents look skeptically at “those kinds of parents.” More normal American kids view such “those kinds of kids” with scorn. If you grow up aspiring to normalcy, normalcy is what you will achieve.
Now close your eyes & visualize which families you knew in the 90s (or even now) who raise their kids according to one model versus the other. Be brutally honest.
“Normalcy” doesn’t cut it in a hyper-competitive global market for technical talent. And if we pretend like it does, we’ll have our asses handed to us by China.
This can be our Sputnik moment. We’ve awaken from slumber before & we can do it again. Trump’s election hopefully marks the beginning of a new golden era in America, but only if our culture fully wakes up. A culture that once again prioritizes achievement over normalcy; excellence over mediocrity; nerdiness over conformity; hard work over laziness.
That’s the work we have cut out for us, rather than wallowing in victimhood & just wishing (or legislating) alternative hiring practices into existence. I’m confident we can do it. 🇺🇸 🇺🇸

I am all kinds of torn up this morning about this thread.
Did @aeroxyz take a GPL3 licensed platform (Solidly) by @AndreCronjeTech and try to turn it into a BUSL platform requiring a paid license to use in production?
I've been so impressed with everything @aeroxyz has been doing on @base and the philosophy that I heard from @wagmiAlexander at Basecamp.
From an execution perspective, they have been 🔥, but this is a really bad look for the project and team if true.
I have not verified the veracity of these claims by @AndreCronjeTech by looking at the code, but have no reason to doubt his integrity in making this charge.
Not only is this an ethical issue, but it could become a legal issue if Andre decides to sue them.
This gets more interesting though, because Andre and Sonic have put a BUSL license on their Sonic-DB (Carmen) tech. It's different, because they are not copying anyone else's code, but even though the tech is open source to experiment with, it is not free to use and requires a paid license to use in production.
Now, the Sonic-DB tech is far superior to anything that exists in blockchain, so I understand the motivation of protecting their competitive advantage, but at the same time, everything in this space has been about free to use open source and this flies in the face of that.
The core issue to address though, is Aerodrome trying to take free code and turn it into proprietary. We need an answer as to their thinking behind this, because it is wrong if true.
