Kemi Badenoch, "Our country is running out of money"
My view: She is literally complaining about the Conservative party's record 🤷♂️
When the Conservatives entered office in 2010, public-sector net debt was around £1 trillion.
By March 2024, when they left office, it was £2.694 trillion.
The Conservatives more than doubled our national debt while cutting public services, that takes a special fiscally irresponsible skill.
Yes, Covid was an enormous and unavoidable shock: government pandemic measures cost roughly £380bn between 2020 and 2025. But that does not explain away the wider record.
A decade of Conservative austerity hollowed out local councils, public health, social care and the NHS. Cutting prevention, timely treatment and support does not make illness disappear; it leaves people sicker for longer, pushes problems into A&E and hospitals, and ultimately costs more.
Then came Brexit: a Conservative project that the OBR says will leave UK trade intensity around 15% lower and long-run productivity 4% lower than if we had remained in the EU. That means a smaller economy, weaker tax revenues and less money available for the services people rely on. Office for Budget Responsibility
Britain is not “running out of money” by accident.
We are living with the bill for 14 years of choices: austerity that damaged the foundations of public services, Brexit that made the country poorer, and repeated Conservative decisions to protect wealth while weakening the state.
