Tell that, Mr @SecWar, to the families of 44 Polish soldiers who died securing the tough Ghazni province.
Hegseth on Afghanistan:
I was a captain in Afghanistan, and we would go to the headquarters in Kabul, and there would be 50 flags at the headquarters.
It was a beautiful thing to see 50 different countries contributing to the NATO alliance and the ISAF mission there.
Except there were like maybe five that contributed. It was actually closer to one or two that, by the end, were actually involved in kinetic operations.
In fact, the ISAF patch, we would joke that it meant "I Saw Americans Fighting."
Community note
Over 1100 non-American soldiers from 31 US-allied countries were killed fighting in Afghanistan, approximately 1/3 of the total combat deaths.

That is true, Mr. Minister of Foreign Affairs. It is heartening to see such courage in commemorating the 44 victims—lives given by Polish soldiers in defense of shared values.
Respect.
By the way, did you, Mr. Minister, happen to mention to Zelensky—on this platform—the more than 200,000 Polish CIVILIANS murdered by „soldiers” from the UPA units?
Do you not believe it?
Then please ask your wife, or perhaps N. Davies—they are historians; they will confirm it.
On 26 May 2026, President Zelenskyy signed Decree No. 440/2026 granting this existing SOF unit (previously just the Separate Special Operations Center “North”) the honorary title “named after the Heroes of the UPA.”… 🤦♂️
