I asked for a transition to active duty. I became a paratrooper, and then an Army Ranger. I deployed to Iraq, and then to Afghanistan. By the time I left the Army, in 2006, hundreds of thousands of other American servicemembers had done the same. Throughout the conflict, millions of Americans would serve. Our country still bears the scars of 9/11. Today, we honor the 2,977 Americans killed on September 11th and the heroism of our first responders.
