The water that data centers use for electricity generation in just the top 7 states with the most data centers is the equivalent of 12-times the annual water use of Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Washington, DC, combined.
The think tank Ceres has a new report detailing how data centers use much more water for electricity generation than they do in the facilities themselves.
Bloomberg just reported on the study, saying that data centers in the seven states with the highest concentrations of them use about 3.4 trillion gallons of freshwater for electric power generation every year, but few electric power producers have connected this increasing power demand to water supply risks.
