The best crime is the one we prevent. Recent CPS investigations have taken illegal guns off our streets and resulted in charges following a hate-motivated assault. The sooner we identify threats and act, the better chance we have of stopping violence before another Calgarian becomes a victim.

ECCO Landfill Fire Update- Sept 24 The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) continues suppression efforts at the ECCO Recycling facility landfill fire in southeast Calgary. The fire remains contained to the landfill site as crews continue working toward full extinguishment. Today, crews continued capping operations by removing debris, flattening affected areas and spreading additional dirt and clay across the site. These efforts help isolate remaining heat sources and support extinguishment efforts. As capping operations continue, crews are observing reduced visible smoke from portions of the site. New drone footage captured over the site today provided an updated aerial view of conditions, helping inform planning and ongoing capping operations. An engineering consultant also attended the site to assess conditions and provide technical expertise in support of ongoing incident management and recovery planning. As the incident enters a longer-term phase, incident management is transitioning to a remote command model. CFD will continue to monitor site conditions, coordinate suppression activities and support ongoing work at the site. Information provided to CFD by Alberta Health Services indicates that recent air quality monitoring has not identified any new exceedances at monitoring locations supporting the incident response. Alberta Health Services notes that air quality can vary significantly over short distances due to wind patterns, terrain and local conditions, with the greatest potential for impacts occurring in areas directly downwind of the fire. Residents may continue to notice occasional smoke, odours or isolated flare-ups from the site. These flare-ups can occur as crews expose and extinguish buried burning material and do not necessarily indicate the fire is expanding beyond the landfill area. Capping operations, monitoring and site rehabilitation activities will continue until the fire risk has been fully mitigated. As operations continue to stabilize, CFD will transition from daily public updates to a weekly update schedule. One of the best parts of being Mayor is recognizing Calgarians who step up. Theo is only six years old, but his quick thinking helped stop a potentially deadly fire. It was an honour for Council to recognize Theo and his proud mom and dad at City Hall. Calgary is proud of you, Theo!

It was wonderful to join the Parks Foundation Calgary for the opening of Canada’s first dementia-inclusive park, the Martin Family Legacy Garden, here in my riding of Calgary-Peigan. I was delighted to celebrate this important milestone alongside Mayor Jeromy Farkas @JeromyYYC, Councillor Harrison Clark @Ward9Harrison and the many volunteers, community organizations, donors and supporters who helped bring this vision to life. Supported by a $500,000 Community Facility Enhancement Program grant from the Government of Alberta, this incredible space was created to support people living with dementia, as well as their families and caregivers. Congratulations to everyone who contributed to this special project, and a heartfelt thank you to the Martin family for their vision and generosity, which made it all possible. This garden will have a lasting impact that Calgary families will cherish for years to come.

UPDATE: Big progress on the Bearspaw South Feeder Main! 80% of the new steel pipe is now installed. Crews have been working since January and we remain on track to have the new feeder main in service by the end of the year.

Bearspaw South Feeder Main Project Update Progress on the Bearspaw South Feeder Main Replacement Project continues to proceed with 80% of the new steel feeder main pipe now installed across Stages A and B – crews remain on track to have the new feeder main connected by the end of the year. What’s happening now? ▪️ Stage A work between the Shaganappi Pump Station and 73 Street N.W. is complete, with crews continuing work on valve chambers, pipe welding and supporting infrastructure. ▪️ Stage B construction in Bowness along 34 Avenue N.W. is progressing well, with more than 1.6 km of new pipe installed. Seven of 13 blocks are now complete, while work continues on the remaining blocks. What’s next? To connect the new feeder main to Calgary’s water system, the existing feeder main will need to be temporarily shut down later this year. During this period, Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions and indoor water conservation measures will be required. Once the connection is complete, restrictions will be lifted, but crews will still need time to fill, disinfect and test the new pipe before it is fully in service. I was deeply saddened to learn of John Lacey’s passing. I knew John for many years. He had a big impact on how I saw Calgary and, in particular, the arts. John made me believe in the importance of the arts to our city. He believed Calgary’s cultural ambitions should match our economic ones, and he spent decades making that happen. His fingerprints are everywhere, from the Calgary Phil and Mount Royal Conservatory to Contemporary Calgary and countless opportunities for young artists and musicians. John believed deeply in Calgary and pushed people around him to think bigger about what our city could become. My condolences to Linda, his family, friends and Calgary’s arts community. Calgary is a better city because John Lacey called us home.

Living on top of an ocean of energy means Albertans should directly benefit when fuel prices are high. Pausing the fuel tax for the duration of this oil price spike will be one of those benefits.

Thrilled to help open the first Research Day at Kids Cancer Care! I got a behind-the-scenes look at the incredible work supporting kids through cancer, from education to staying active. Thank you to the volunteers, parents, staff and board who make it possible.

What happened to Parker Wells is heartbreaking. Our review found serious failures in how the 911 calls were handled, causing a delay of about 17 minutes. As mayor, I am deeply sorry. Disciplinary action has been taken. We are making changes, and we have to own this.

UPDATE: Thank you to Council for agreeing to hear our pro-Canada motion as urgent business, and to Councillor Yule for co-sponsoring. The motion as asks Council to affirm Calgary's place as a vital part of Alberta and Canada. Debate happens later today.
