The guy actually looked me in the eye and said "how could you possibly decline?"
My kids earn their own money. Chores, helping with the family business, whatever. My eldest saved up and decided she wanted wireless headphones. So we headed to Canada Computers to pick something out and I let her handle the entire transaction as I stood behind her to guide her if needed.
She ended up choosing a pair of JBL wireless earbuds $49.99. When she went to go pay they upsold her on "Warranty Protection" and she looked back at me and I simply said, it's your decision. It was about $12, I cant remember exactly. She quickly decided to purchase the protection.
Not even 1 month into using them they stopped working.
We were away on vacation so we didn't bring them back right away, and by the time we got home and dug out the box and the receipt we were well outside the window, which I didn't think much about because we had the warranty. This time, I'm handling the transaction.
They look at the receipt and go "it's been more than 30 days, sorry."
Ah. But we bought the warranty protection.
I felt proud, my daughter made a decision and it worked out in her favour.
They could not do anything on the spot, they had to do testing to make sure it was actually defective. So we waited 2 weeks and got a call to come pick up a brand new pair. At this point I was letting her handle the transaction again.
As they were preparing to hand over the earbuds they asked "would you like to purchase the warranty protection for $12?"
My daughter immediately said "NO" .... Another proud dad moment.
But I quickly contested it, wait she has to buy it again? "Yes," they said proudly, you see this transaction has now consumed your warranty protection and these new ear buds would not be covered. I protested. They replied "What do you mean, you just saw first hand how handy that warranty protection comes in! How could you possibly decline when you just get a brand new pair if anything is wrong."
The earphones cost $49.99. How many times will we be forced to pay another $12 just incase? You think if these break again we would want a replacement instead of a refund? Obviously it is a poorly made product if it keeps having to be replaced.
FYI if something is wrong within the first 30 days you can return or exchange, but once your outside of that you are SOL. And all they do is return it to the manufacture and claim the manufactures warranty, which you can completely do on your own for free.
Do not buy warranty protection from Canada Computers
Deep down we all know not to buy the warranty.
I would’ve said no but I let her decide instead.
Was that $12 a waste… or the best money she’s ever spent?
