Burkina Faso Overhauls Its Curriculum to Reclaim African History
Burkina Faso is officially overhauling its national curriculum to strip out colonial biases, replacing terms like "explorers" and "conquerors" with "invaders" and "spies" in history, geography, and citizenship textbooks.
The reform introduces 54 new lessons from primary through secondary school that drop Eurocentric benchmarks in favor of indigenous political structures, local resistance movements, and African scientific contributions.
By emphasizing that African societies existed and thrived long before European contact, this initiative plans to correct decades of distorted narratives and reclaim the continent's true history.
