Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski says NATO could defeat Russia “quite quickly” without the US, pointing to Europe’s airpower and claiming Russia’s remaining refining capacity could be knocked out in six weeks. But he is being incredibly stupid if he thinks you can simply count Russia’s allies out of the equation. A war involving Russia would not necessarily be Russia vs. Europe in isolation. Russia has partners with enormous military capabilities. China has the world’s largest navy by number of ships, with more than 370 vessels in its battle force — and its fleet continues to expand. Iran has a massive missile and drone arsenal and extensive experience with asymmetric warfare. North Korea has one of the world’s largest conventional militaries and a growing ballistic-missile program. And there is one detail that makes these six-week calculations especially dangerous: Russia possesses the world’s largest nuclear arsenal, with an estimated 5,420 nuclear warheads. China and North Korea are also nuclear-armed states. You cannot seriously calculate a hypothetical war by simply counting European aircraft against Russian aircraft. You have to account for allies, missiles, naval power, logistics, industrial capacity, air defence, cyber capabilities, escalation — and most importantly, nuclear deterrence. Europe may possess enormous conventional military power. But Iran has already demonstrated that overwhelming conventional military superiority does not automatically translate into a quick or even decisive victory — if any at all. A war between nuclear-armed blocs is not a video game where you add up fighter jets and declare a winner.

The US will never confront the UAE over its role in sponsoring the genocide in Sudan, because Trump now sees the UAE as firmly pro-West. The hypocrisy in geopolitics and international law is disgusting. When the accused is an adversary or African, the West demands accountability. When the accused is a strategic partner, even African, amnesia suddenly strikes. International law becomes an afterthought then.

This man stands accused of bankrolling the genocide in Sudan. His name is Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, President of the UAE. In sudan, thousands of women and children have been raped — then executed. Tens of thousands of innocent Sudanese have been massacred. In El Fasher, the UN documented over 6,000 killings in just three days. Just three short days! Thousands have been buried alive, with their hands in the air. Civilians have endured massacres, starvation, sexual violence and the destruction of their homes. The UN has documented murder, rape, sexual slavery, torture and forced displacement in and around El Fasher. Countless villages across Darfur have been burned to the ground, with their inhabitants alongside them. Over 6 million Sudanese have been forced from their homes, many driven into refugee camps across Sudan and neighbouring countries. Their crime? Being “non-Arab.” Their true crime? Being born in a country with enormous mineral wealth. The scale of inhumanity being inflicted on the Sudanese people is unfathomable. While Sudan burns and its people bleed, the UAE stands accused of financing and arming the forces responsible for some of the worst atrocities — while Sudanese gold continues to flow through the UAE. UN reporting has documented networks linking the RSF to gold revenues and external supply routes. A blood heist of unimaginable proportion. Sudan’s people deserve justice. FREE SUDAN 🇸🇩

On March 16, 1968, US troops were raping and massacring Vietnamese civilians including children and babies at My Lai. Then an American helicopter pilot named Hugh Thompson Jr. saw what was happening — and decided he could not stand by. Thompson was flying a reconnaissance mission in an OH-23 Raven with his two crewmen, Glenn Andreotta and Lawrence Colburn. Their job was to scout ahead of the ground troops and identify enemy positions. But something was terribly wrong. From the air, Thompson noticed bodies everywhere — women, children, infants and elderly people. There was virtually no return fire. He marked wounded civilians with smoke so they could receive medical help. But when he came back, he discovered that some of the people he had marked as wounded had been shot dead. He watched a wounded Vietnamese woman lying on the ground. An American soldier approached her, prodded her with his foot — and shot her in the head. Thompson was horrified. He then saw a group of 12–15 Vietnamese women and children fleeing toward a bunker while American soldiers pursued them. He landed his helicopter between the civilians and the soldiers. Thompson confronted the Americans and ordered his crew to cover the civilians. He told his gunner, Lawrence Colburn, to train his M60 on the American troops and fire if they opened fire on the Vietnamese. Think about that. An American soldier had reached the point where he was willing to risk shooting fellow American soldiers to prevent them from committing more war crimes. Thompson then helped get the civilians out of the bunker and called in other helicopters to evacuate them. His crew helped rescue Vietnamese survivors and wounded children. After returning to base, Thompson immediately reported what he had witnessed to his superiors. Hugh and his men deserve to be remembered, not because they were American soldiers, but because they chose humanity when others had abandoned it. While others were killing innocent people, these three Americans risked their lives to save them. That is courage. That is humanity. This is Thompson Hugh Jr.

Ethiopia is helping the UAE commit a genocide in Sudan. A Reuters investigation found that Ethiopia is hosting a secret camp used to train thousands of Rapid Support Forces terrorists. According to sources cited by Reuters, the UAE financed the camp and supplied military trainers and logistical support. Colombian mercenaries are training RSF terrorists there too — particularly in drone operations. Think about that. A terrorist group accused of some of the worst atrocities of Sudan's war is being reinforced with foreign money, foreign trainers and foreign mercenaries. When the RSF captured El Fasher, UN investigators documented more than 6,000 people killed in the first three days alone. Civilians were summarily executed. People were tortured, buried alive and buened alive. Men, women and children were killed and subjected raped along escape routes. And the scale of the slaughter was so enormous that evidence of it could be seen from space. Satellite imagery analyzed by Yale's Humanitarian Research Lab identified multiple clusters of objects consistent with human bodies across El Fasher, including along roads used by civilians trying to escape. Piles of bodies ! Visible from satellites orbiting hundreds of kilometres above the Earth. The UN says the RSF's attacks against the Zaghawa and Fur communities bore the defining characteristics of genocide. More than 14 million Sudanese have been displaced by this war. And while Sudanese civilians are being slaughtered, tortured, raped and driven from their homes, Sudan's gold continues moving through regional networks toward Dubai. The Sudanese are bleeding. 20 years ago today, on September 20, 2006, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez stood at the UN General Assembly podium and called U.S. President George W. Bush “the devil.” Chávez was addressing the UN one day after Bush had spoken there. “The devil came here yesterday. Yesterday, the devil came here. Right here. And it still smells of sulfur today.” The speech became one of the most memorable moments in UN history, as Chávez denounced U.S. foreign policy, the Iraq War, and what he described as American imperialism.

If the UN cared even remotely about human rights and international law, these two gentlemen would never be allowed anywhere near the UN General Assembly. Yet here they are, addressing the very institution created to uphold international peace, human rights and the rule of law.
