Today would have been my big brother Luke’s 44th birthday. Sadly he passed away last Tuesday from cancer. He was a loving father and husband, successful academic and my best friend and I’ll miss him terribly.
I have spent a lot of the past few days trying to make sense of this. But sometimes things don’t make sense and all we can do is sit with our grief and hold the people we love close. The best advice I received from someone during my brothers illness was never leave anything unsaid. Tell the people what they mean to you.
Happy birthday bro, I love you.

Reform cut transport for young carers in Calderdale.
Young carers are those between 8 and 18 who look after parents or siblings with severe disabilities, mental health problems, or issues with drugs and alcohol. The council currently funds transport to sessions which offer respite support like movie nights, an opportunity to meet other young carers, and way to have a voice on the services that support them. From 1st October Calderdale Reform will cut transport to help them get to the sessions.
They say politics is the language of priorities, Reform have shown yet again that their priority is not young people who need the council’s support.
Elections have consequences and this is just the start.

National Manufacturing Day is an incredible opportunity for local young people to learn about the exciting careers they can explore in industry. It was great to see their enthusiasm and talk to some innovative local businesses who sell high quality products from Calder Valley all around the world.

Ben Obese-Jecty has served our country in the army and now serves our country as an MP. Attacks on him for being somehow less British because he acknowledges his Ghanaian heritage are despicable and have no place in our politics. We all have to call it out.

The motions was proposed by Dan Sutherland who now leads Reform & will try to scrap it tomorrow. Dan’s views change more than the weather!

ACTION AT CALDER QUARRY
You may have seen recent media reports that the Environment Agency (EA) has obtained a court order preventing further waste being brought into Calder Quarry in Old Earth.
I first raised this issue with the EA after being contacted by residents in the area who were concerned about foul smells and traffic close to homes and schools. Calderdale Council had tried and been unsuccessful in preventing waste being dumped there.
This is now the subject of an active criminal investigation, but what I can tell you is what the court order means. Quite simply, for the next 6 months no further waste should be brought onto the site and access to the land is restricted. During this time the EA will be making unannounced checks, and any apparent breaches will be investigated. There are legal penalties for breaching the order including up to two years' imprisonment, an unlimited fine, or both. An application can be made to extend the order if needed.
I would like to thank the EA for engaging with me on this and taking action to put a stop to it. Any further issues can be reported to them through their incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60.

Clare lives in a south London apartment with a mortgage which she’ll be paying off for decades.
It’s small, but she’s decorated it to her taste. She couldn’t afford the full second bedroom but there’s just enough room for a single bed when mum comes to stay.
It’s not Clare’s fault that London’s supply of new homes is at a post-war low pushing the price of flats like hers to the point it may exceed £1.5 million.
As she gets up at dawn, Clare looks out the window at the social housing estate next door. Her taxes pay for many of its tenants to live in Zone 1. It’s quiet now but when she comes home in the dark, the smell of cannabis catches in her throat.
She sees many of them have cars she can’t afford herself. Clare would like to live further away, but she needs to get to work for 7.30 am, and the state-run railway is unreliable. She feels unsafe travelling and walking home at night.
It’s been another busy week at work, so she hasn’t seen the detail, but friends have messaged her about whopping rises in her council tax next year. She dreads to think.
Clare thinks it’s a ‘f***ing joke’ that Andy Burnham wants to slap a mansion tax on top of everything else she pays. She doesn’t live in a mansion - just a tiny flat.
Clare is right.
I’ll be a Chancellor for hard-working people like Clare.

About 14 years ago I lived in Kentish Town, I was even briefly the secretary of the Labour branch before going back to Yorkshire. I’ve been proud to spend a few sessions in H&StP talking to voters about what a wonderful voice for the area @Sagal_AW will be in Parliament.
