You asked for my thoughts. Sadly, I have a lot of them on the topic. But for me the most impactful one is around leadership in general. When I was a young man, I was blessed to go to dinner with General Norman Schwarzkopf. During that dinner we got to talk about his "Rule 14" of leadership. It was the rule that a leader should always "Do what is right." And that when things are difficult, a leader always knows what is morally and ethically the correct thing to do. Even if it is difficult, you do the right thing. Marshall Gramm's utilization of private HISA data can be argued legally and it can be viewed from the always checkered world of data utilization in American racing. But what bothers me the most is that Marshall was a "leader" in the industry. He was invited to the most important circles and he was granted the responsibility to represent the entire game once he was at the table. With that responsibility, when he identified an obvious and clear technical data management failing by HISA's Portal, instead of "doing the right thing" and instantly tell the powers that be at HISA about it, he decided to utilize the data. Someone would say that he actually exploited it. He decided not to lead at all. He decided to find his angle and profit off of it. I do not know Marshall. I have met him at racing events and had brief conversations. But his actions just make me sad. Anytime a leader fails at Rule 14, we all must pay the price. Sadly, I think Marshall all let us down.

HISA stinks, I get it. But Jockey Club Member, Horse Owner & Contest Player Marshall Gramm found a loophole in their system and instead of correcting it, exploited the shit out of it and used the info for himself before finally getting caught. What am I missing?
