Very sad to see the wildfires spreading across Colorado. The Aspen Acres Fire has burned nearly 100,000 acres in just over a week, forcing thousands of people to evacuate. This piece of old railroad steel marks the first Billion dollars in revenue in ButcherBox’s history. The steel came from train tracks in Concord, MA. Frederic Tudor (the “Ice King”) used those same tracks to ship the first ever harvested ice in the early 1800s. He cut ice from frozen New England lakes and sent it around the world. Everyone swore he was out of his mind, but he didn't care. He failed first and then built a global cold-chain that revolutionized the food industry before mechanical refrigeration even existed. The Ice King’s story inspired us at ButcherBox. One night in Boston, we packed into a bar next to the TD garden and at 1:19AM watched the Stripe app tick up to $1,000,000,000. I wish the Ice King could have been there with us.
