There's a reason folks used to teach children about Chicken Little and the-sky-is-falling doomerism. The boy who cried wolf also falls into this category. Scaring people to manipulate them is nothing new

Saw a truck yesterday with the strangest dents, and starting spinning a story to my Mr about monsters... and he launched into an explanation about rocks. Not gonna lie, part of me wilted inside. But then he spelled out r-o-c, as in the mythical bird, and my heart was won all over again 🥰

Late 1800s women of wit
In April 1889, the British weekly magazine Tit-Bits published a collection of witty responses from unmarried women answering the question, “Why Am I a Spinster?” Rather than expressing regret over remaining single, these Victorian women responded with sharp humor, clever metaphors, and pointed criticism of marriage. Some compared men unfavorably to less affectionate household animals, while others likened husbands to pastries that look tempting on the outside but turn out to be disappointing inside. Many also mocked the expectation that wives should shoulder endless unpaid domestic work. Their unapologetic celebration of independence and personal freedom makes the responses feel surprisingly modern—and still funny more than a century later.

Easy to picture Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot strolling along these streets
Beautiful 16mm film of the Isle of Wight in the 1950s. Peaceful villages, cottages with thatched roofs, and seaside life all captured on somebody’s home movie.
