Malone, New York - Since 1805 I wasn't born in a big city. I was born in a town that taught me what America is. Malone started in 1805, carved out of Chautauqua. First they called it "Harison" after Richard Harison, then "Ezraville" in 1808 after Ezra L'Hommedieu, then finally Malone in 1812. That same year, British troops came down from Canada and sacked the village during the War of 1812. We rebuilt. We became the county seat of Franklin County — named after Benjamin Franklin in 1808. We sit on the Salmon River. We're the gateway to the Adirondack Park. We have Titus Mountain to the south, Route 11 Antique Alley running through us, and the longest-running county fair in New York State. This little town gave America big things: William Almon Wheeler — the 19th Vice President of the United States, born here in 1819 on Elm Street. Almanzo Wilder — husband of Laura Ingalls Wilder of Little House on the Prairie. Orville Gibson — founder of Gibson Guitars. But what Malone really gave me is simpler. Main Street. Neighbors who know your name. A flag that still means something on a front porch. The belief that the Constitution wasn't written for Washington — it was written for towns like this. That's why I write. I write about the America I still see from Malone, NY.
