Fall '88, went to a gospel studio with my newly purchased Roland 808. The rapping part went well from years of making bedroom tapes, but we went wild with all the effects/synths, and turned our raw 808 beat into a sci-fi score AND somehow wound up with a flat BASS drum... #FAIL

Upski was cool peoples. Ran into him at a few random Hip Hop shows in Chicago in the 90s. I was actually at the release party (and/or after party?) for this book release...
This was required reading for my generation of hip-hop in the 90s. I was about to say that Upski never gets mentioned anymore, but he gets quoted handsomely in the anticon books recently published by @caltrops_press. I need to revisit this one.

I happened to be in NY, at the Profile Records office the day they got the masters (?) back for "Hustlin'" b/w "Broken Language" 12". So I got to be one of the first to hear it, and was blown away. That led to me being one of the first to interview him also...he was cool peeps.
before Broken Language dropped an upcoming MC wanted me to come to Brownsville, I had no idea if he was nice or not. It was Smooth the hustler we were rhyming, then Trigger rhymed,D.V Khrist rhymed,random kids on the block with no deal killin shit. EVERY ONE was Extra nice
