I've had 11th graders that don't know what a paragraph is. I don't mean that they can't write a paragraph (they can't), but that they don't actually know what one is. I've asked students to look for the third paragraph on a page, or some such direction, only to get asked "what is that?" I am not exaggerating. I am not being sensational. I have a lot of ideas for how things got so bad, but it is undeniably bad. The average person has no idea.
