The answer will always be the elite rim protector.
Any team building a defense is taking Rudy Gobert over Bam Adebayo. Bam is better in space but Rudy changes what offenses can get at the rim and that has more of an impact. Teams have always valued great rim protectors because forcing an offense into lower-value shots is the foundation of an elite defense.
History proves this too. Rasheed Wallace was a great defender but those Pistons were built around Ben Wallace erasing the paint. Versatility matters but elite rim protection has always been the most valuable defensive trait in basketball.
Which defender is more valuable?
An elite rim protector who can be targeted on the perimeter
or
A solid rim protector who can legitimately defend in space
