You don’t get to build a policy on a claim of certainty, get that claim FOIA’d down to a pamphlet, watch your own guideline body call itself “just an opinion” under oath, and then write a Viewpoint accusing the other side of confusing evidence with ethics. @GuyattGH

25 years ago I pointed out the founder of Tavistock GIDS that most of the camp boys and tomboy girls if left alone would just turn out to be gay adults and asked ‘isn’t what you’re doing to them mad??’.
His reply:
“But is it anymore mad than if they were to turn out gay?”
The Tavistock taught that homosexuality was not ‘normal’ and their belief was that it was preferable for a potentially gay child to be ‘transed’ into ‘heterosexuality’ he was vey clear on that.

Dear Mr. Brewer,
I read your Aug. 25 column on @EnesFreedom and Natasha Cloud with intense dismay, and I want to push back on several of its central claims.
I find this line to be the most egregious: "If the trans athlete debate were an organic, fully woman-led controversy, it could have prompted meaningful conversation, empathy in the pursuit of solutions and thoughtful measures taken after an extended process."
This is factually wrong, and it erases the women who have been doing exactly that organizing for years — independent of Enes Kanter Freedom or Royce White, and often well before either of them entered the conversation.

These are women — athletes, coaches, civil rights advocates — who have built organizations, filed legal challenges, and spoken publicly on this issue on their own terms. Attributing the entire debate's origin to "men with extreme right-wing views" doesn't just get the history wrong.
It denies agency to the women who've actually been leading it.
You also write that the phrase "protecting women's sports" "is used for permission to exclude."
Yes.
That's the point. Sex-based categories in sports exist precisely to exclude males from female competition, because that exclusion is what makes fair competition for women possible in the first place.
I'd welcome your correction, and naming the women who've been doing this work for years — in this column or another.

Mr. Arday could have made any claim under the sun to himself in the mirror, but it was only when the world engaged with him on those claims that they achieved their social and mythical importance. Trans, with these young people and their families was the same.
The young people could claim a new name — but they needed someone outside of themselves to say it. They could claim new pronouns — but they needed you to use them, from your voice. They could write that name on their own notebooks — but they needed the teacher to call it out in morning roll call.
