🚨 The math ain’t mathing.
We’re being told moving U.S. Space Command HQ from Colorado to Huntsville will create 30,000 jobs in Alabama.
But when reporters asked for the actual economic-impact numbers at the announcement, Alabama officials said about 1,600 direct jobs plus roughly 3,000 spin-off jobs. Huntsville’s own Chamber now says about 1,400 direct positions will move over five years, with 2 to 3 indirect jobs per direct job. That lands in the neighborhood of 4,000–5,600 jobs, not 30,000.
And here’s the part people are going to miss:
Those direct jobs aren’t all brand-new jobs.
Space Command already exists in Colorado. GAO reported 1,379 authorized positions at the command, with 1,024 filled as of October 2024. Moving the headquarters means moving existing positions, relocating workers, replacing workers who don’t move, and shifting federal spending from one state to another.
So if Colorado loses a position and Alabama fills that same position, calling that a completely “new” job without explaining the subtraction is doing some creative accounting.
Then it gets stranger.
The Air Force’s own long-term community forecasts concluded that Space Command’s presence would have minimal economic impact on any candidate location. At the same time, viral posts are selling this as 30,000 jobs and massive investment raining down on Huntsville.
Will Huntsville benefit? Absolutely. Construction, contractors, housing, infrastructure, federal spending, direct employment.
But “30,000 new jobs created” is not the same thing as:
1,400-ish existing positions relocating + indirect economic activity + replacement hiring + projections.
Those are very different claims.
And Huntsville becoming “Rocket City”?
Baby, Huntsville has been called Rocket City for decades. Even its own Chamber says so. 😂🚀
So before everybody starts celebrating 30,000 magical new jobs appearing overnight:
Show me the math.
Show me what Colorado loses.
Show me what is actually new.
Show me what is relocated.
Show me what is projected.
Because right now the headline is doing a hell of a lot more work than the numbers. 🛰️🧾
