Now that the buzz surrounding Spotify’s logo change has died down, it is worth analyzing what this really tells us about design 🧵
Designers spend hours debating visual styles, yet users take only a few seconds to decide if something feels right...
When Spotify temporarily changed its logo to a disco ball to celebrate its anniversary, designers discussed the change internally as part of the special celebration.
Most users? They simply hit play, or worse, they felt such a sense of unfamiliarity that they became suspicious.
That is the difference between how designers evaluate interfaces and how people actually experience them.
No one opens an app thinking, "Interesting use of layered transparency." They think:
• Does this make sense?
• Can I trust this?
• Can I do what I came here to do?
The products people love aren't usually the ones with the trendiest visual style; in fact, they are the ones where the design doesn't get in the way and the experience simply feels natural.
Style should be the result of good product decisions, not the starting point 💫
