The Department of Transportation considers freezing funding for bike lanes and other pedestrian safety projects as the Trump administration leans into fossil fuels.
Because the Safe Streets program funding was congressionally allocated, explicitly including “bicyclists,” the move to cut programs “whose primary purpose is bicycling” may not even be legal. Read more @grist, where I'm delighted to be reporting again!

Do you like bikes? Trump's Department of Transportation plans to cut funding for safer streets. An internal memo called for a funding freeze and review of pedestrian safety projects, specifically those that “improve the condition for environmental justice communities."
These cuts target programs like Safe Streets and Roads for All, which make streets safer for everyone—right when pedestrian deaths are rising. Unlike other high-income countries, Americans were 50 percent more likely to die walking in 2022 than they were in 2013.

Two weeks ago, I spoke to fired Forest Service employees concerned that the job cuts will be used as justification to open the door to privatizing public lands. Today, DOI Secretary Burgum announced a plan to transfer federal lands into private hands.

🚨Bureau of Land Management fire management staff across multiple states told me DOGE put a $1 limit on their credit cards this week, preventing them from buying time-sensitive supplies. It means if there were to be a fire, they potentially couldn’t travel to fight it.

I spoke to recently fired Forest Service concerned that the job cuts will prevent the agency from properly managing national forests and wildfire threats — and potentially be used as justification to weaken federal management and open the door to privatizing public lands.
Though firefighters were supposed to be exempt from these staff cuts, many who lost their jobs like conducted essential work for fire crews. Hiring for hotshot crews has also been frozen. Read more @LeverNewslevernews.com/the-firefighti…
🚨 AI is quietly reshaping the government. President Trump has said he wants to make the U.S. "the world capital of AI," but these systems are already wrongfully denying people health care, food, and housing at scale.🧵

He's launched TechTonic Justice to build a coalition that can train lawyers, educate communities, and fight back against AI-driven harms.

True. Heads were spinning across the mortgage industry today. “The DOGE guys are knocking down walls without knowing where there’s financial plumbing,” said a mortgage industry source. “Eventually, they are gonna to put a hole through something that matters.” @Capitol_Forum
NEW from me: Russ Vought was on the verge of breaking the mortgage market by shutting down a core function provided by CFPB. But he blinked, and in so doing revealed that regulation is actually pretty important. (link below)
