I borrowed £43,871 when I went to uni and graduated in 2020. I have been paying off my Plan 2 student loan since April 2021. Today, my balance is £89,861.50. Back in August 2024 my interest rate was 8% each month. To put that into context, that’s £590.90, and I could only afford to pay £115.00. How is this fair? In 2016 I was told it would feel like a household bill or a trip to the cinema. Now it’s the difference between getting on the property ladder or staying in rented flat shares. Every month, to this day, £307.30 of interest is added to my bill. And I’m projected to pay 9% of my salary for the next 25 years to repay my student loan. This has to end. A Restore Britain government will fix this injustice and will always put British men and women first.

In 1526, the king of Kongo wrote to the king of Portugal and begged him to stop the slave trade. The letters still exist. You can read them. King Afonso I — Nzinga Mbemba. He was not a victim of ignorance about Europe. He was literate in Portuguese, Catholic, and had welcomed Portuguese traders as partners. Then he watched what the trade actually did. He writes that merchants are seizing people every day — nobles, family members, free subjects — and that his country is being emptied. He asks for teachers and doctors instead of ships. He asks, plainly, for it to stop. Portugal's king replied with a letter pointing out how profitable Kongo's trade was and how little else it had to offer. The trade continued for another three hundred years and helped destroy the kingdom. An African head of state put his objection in writing in 1526, in the language of the people doing it, and was told the arithmetic did not work in his favour. "They didn't know" has never been available as an excuse. The correspondence is in the archives.

Disability costs more because the market CHARGES more. Not because it COSTS more. The word "adapted" on the box adds 300-500% to the price. PIP exists to cover the "extra cost of disability." But the extra cost is ARTIFICIAL. Created by manufacturers who know you NEED the product and price accordingly. Fix the price. Sell aids at cost. Remove the markup. Remove the VAT. Remove the glossy catalogue and the sales rep's commission. The "extra cost of disability" drops by 60-80%. PIP spending falls. Without cutting a single person's support. Radiology used to have something that was almost invisible because it was so routine: The reading room consult. Rounding teams came down. Surgeons pulled up their cases. Internists brought the scan that didn't quite fit the clinical picture. Sometimes the radiologist solved the problem. Sometimes the clinician supplied one piece of history that completely changed how the images were interpreted. And usually everyone simply walked away a little sharper. But something else was happening during all of those conversations. We were learning each other. As a radiologist, I learned what individual physicians cared about. I knew which findings mattered to a particular surgeon. Which measurements an oncologist was following. Which details a specialist wanted emphasized. What questions they were really asking, even when the order just said "pain." And they learned me. They knew who was reading their study. They knew they could walk in, point at something, challenge an interpretation, or ask, "What do you think?" That relationship created context. It created feedback. It created trust. And over years, it created a kind of institutional knowledge that never appears in the medical record. When radiology becomes a report produced by someone hundreds or thousands of miles away, we don't just lose proximity. We risk losing that entire feedback loop. The report may still be technically excellent. But the radiologist knows less about the physician. The physician knows less about the radiologist. The radiologist sees less of what happened after the report. And both sides lose opportunities to make each other better. The reading room was never just a room. It was where imaging became part of the clinical conversation. We should think very carefully before designing that conversation out of medicine. Inspired by a conversation yesterday with @PaleoOnc .
