As a proud Virginia Military Institute (VMI) graduate and former active-duty U.S. Army Special Operations Forces Officer, I’m thrilled to follow in George Marshall’s (VMI ‘1901) footsteps to shape America’s officer corps. America demands senior officers that can build and sustain combat power, layer battlefield effects, and impose devastating costs on our Nation’s enemies. The Joint Warfighter Evaluation (JWE) and a departure from careerism are critical to this end and enhancing senior officer selection and assignment processes. Who we promote, and who we empower matters, and affects everything from recruitment, to retention, to readiness and quality of life. Aggressive innovation in talent-management is key, and we must not build a military that operates solely based on the last conflicts it had a positive experience fighting. We are not guaranteed such privilege in the future. Shout out to the many incredible uniformed and civilian leaders across the Joint Force and @DeptofWar working to make the JWE happen and thank you @stuartscheller and @SecWar for trusting me to support this transformative initiative. I’ve been reflecting on yesterday’s results in Virginia, a state I went to college in and hold very dear. Elections have consequences. If one doesn’t win enough votes in enough places, they don’t govern. Period. Republicans must be brave, and must truly represent the people that elected them. America cannot survive the alternative.
